Placeholder conflicting with validation

Why is is that when I use a placeholder validation doesn’t work and just lets the whole form submit?
Here is my form code example of how the required fields look:
[text* first-name class:size-1 placeholder “*First Name”]
Any ideas as to why this is happening?
