placeholder item in custom menu?

    Hi,
    I’m working on a custom menu for the high school I teach at. I want the menu to have 9 different “categories” (home, news, students, parents, staff, cheetah life, departments, administration, contact). Each of these categories is a parent and will have a number of child/grandchild items that include external links, links to site pages and categories, etc.

    My question is this- of these 9 items, the only “categories” that are working links are home and contact- all the rest I would like to be placeholders- simply parent names at the top of a drop down menu.

    I can get the custom menu to include external links, links to pages, permalinked files and categories. I don’t know how to create a “placeholder” at the top of or IN a menu as a child or grandchild.

    Any ideas out there wordpress nation?
