• Hello,
I am having an issue with the player. Suddenly last night the player stopped displaying a play button, and when you click on it, it just refreshes the page. My feed, however, is working fine. Before last night, it was working without a problem.
    I have tried:
-doing every fix issues option in settings.
-restoring my site to a previous version
-disabling the player under Media Appearance (using both options – but the black box is still there)
-using the html5 player option (it only doubled the black box so I had two on top of each other)

I was told by my hosting support that the problem is the theme (Highend), but when I went to ask for support from the theme developers, they (of course) told me to ask for support from the plugin developers. I’m at a total loss. At this point, I would be happy to find the way to make that black box disappear completely and use the soundcloud option as a media player and PowerPress just for my feed, which is the only thing that seems to work.

The best way to test whether or not the theme is causing the issue is to temporarily switch to the stock 2016 theme. If you do that and the player appears as normal, then the problem is with the theme.

Also, have you tried going to PowerPress >> Settings, Advanced Mode >> Media Appearance and selecting the Disable PowerPress Media and Links option and clicking the Save Changes button? That should at least keep the player from displaying.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the support team at blue host verified that it was the theme. And I have clicked the disable media option (both the general one at the top in appearances and the other one that appears under player location), and that stubborn black rectangle that does nothing is still there.

You have more options. You can enable the player and links under Appearance, but also go to the Basic settings tab, under the episode entry box settings you can check a box to provide an embed code. Then you can paste the player from SoundCloud in an embed box when you create your episodes. You can even check a sub option to have this embed replace the default player. Essentially doing this allows you to keep the episode and subscribe links below the player, while replacing the player completely with the SoundCloud one.

Themes that style the default MediaElement.js player can break when a major release of WordPress comes out that updates the player. I’m not sure of the details with the latest change to the mediaelement.js player in WP 4.5, hopefully theme developers can fix it promptly.

Thank you so much for that detailed response! I suspected that it had to do with the WordPress update.
I wasn’t using soundcloud initially (I was storing stuff on lib syn and putting the download link into power press), but I may switch to using soundcloud exclusively since the player seems to have less issues, at least for the moment. It’s just slightly more hassle to get a download link for powerpress. And the only other issue was not having the subscribe links, but hopefully by following your suggestion that will no longer be an issue!

We (Blubrry) just launched our own player. We will have an update to PowerPress coming out soon that incorporates the new player, though it is for Blubrry hosting customers only. It is similar to SoundCloud’s player being that it is an iframe embed, which means it is not susceptible to javascript conflicts on the page like the mediaelement.js player is.

The advantage of using Blubrry Hosting over SoundCloud or Libsyn is that you can do everything from your WordPress site. Plus this gives you an opportunity to support the company that provides you PowerPress! ?? If you want to learn more please email me cio [at] blubrry dot com.
