    Hello, Gabe,

    FANTASTIC plugin!

However, it’s virtually impossible to remember exactly what specific decisions I’ve already made in the past for each particular asset (and exactly why I made those decisions). As I work with “Asset Cleanup” more and more, I’ve come to realize that it would be extremely helpful to have a built-in, permanently saved, editable, asset-specific “Notes” field at the bottom of each asset’s row.

    asset-cleanup-notes-feature-request

    Please advise.

@jasonbear consider it done, it will be added to the next release as you’re not the first one asking for it. You should see it when you will update the plugin from the Dashboard next time, but in case you don’t for any reason, write to me here and it will be sorted!

PS: I’m glad you like the plugin and I’m open to further feature requests ??

@jasonbear to make it as easy to use and manage, I believe it would be easier to have one note per “handle”. When you edit a page/post/custom post type etc. it would show the same note for that asset.

Are you thinking of leaving different notes for the same “handle” depending on the pages you edit?

For instance, if you use “Contact Form 7” assets on /contact/ page and one more page (e.g. Request a booking), then you can put a note such as “This asset is only needed in the ‘Contact’ and ‘Request a booking’ pages”. But, what if a plugin has 10 assets loaded? It could be annoying to write the same comment for all of its assets.

I assume you want to place notes only a few assets where it’s difficult to remember the reason why you have unloaded them in the first place?

Let me know what you think based on your experience! The feature will be simple in the beginning, but it can be improved later on.

“But, what if a plugin has 10 assets loaded? It could be annoying to write the same comment for all of its assets.”

Good question. Honestly, either option would work for me.

Option 1: One “Notes” field per plugin
If there is only one “Notes” field for each plugin (regardless of the number of individual assets loaded by that plugin), I would simply write an individual note(s) per asset, as needed.

Option 2: Separate “Notes” field per asset
Self-explanatory; if each field is collapsible (with open/closed memory), the visual footprint would be minimal.

“I assume you want to place notes only a few assets where it’s difficult to remember the reason why you have unloaded them in the first place?”

Yes, that is generally correct. Notes are also helpful in reminding me why I decided to NOT unload a particular asset. Sometimes, unloading a particular asset actually increases load time, so it’s good to have a note there to avoid unnecessarily repeating the same round of tests.

    Hello, Gabe,

Just wondering if you have an update on this feature.

    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hello, Jason!

The assets list layout will be updated in the next tag including the handle’s notes (for each CSS/JS). If the note will be short (e.g. ~128 characters), it will show it all. If it’s longer, it will show a “Read more” link that will expand with the rest of the content (e.g. something like “Show / Hide” for inline code associated with the handle). The layout will also contain sorting options so you will be able to sort the list in various ways without going to “Settings” (this will save some time and allow you to easily see specific assets and their dependencies etc.).

I might add this option before the tag is updated. If that’s the case, I can let you know so you will have to re-download the same tag.

PS: Download the plugin again and have a look at “Assets List Layout” option from “Settings” -> “General & Files Management”. I believe these sorting options (currently five) will work very well with the “Notes” feature.

    Best wishes,
    Gabe

@jasonbear I’ve added the “Notes” feature to the development version:

    1) Go to https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-asset-clean-up/advanced/
    2) Scroll to “Previous versions” and download the “Development” zip file

It will be added very soon to the tag. It just needs more testing, perhaps you can test it out. The notes are per handle.
