Please add an HTML5 live upload progress uploader for attaching images

    The current system is very dated in terms of styling, also it’s not a good user experience having the images upload only after hitting submit.

    There’s no feedback that the images are being uploaded in the background, and if the images are large or there are more than one then it seems like the page is unresponsive or hanging, which could cause the user to bounce on leaving the review.

    It would be much better if the images are uploaded immediately after selecting them, and there was some kind of progress bar and feedback that the upload was successful. That way they could upload while the user is writing the review, and then they hit submit the final processing is instant.

    That’s actually the upload file custom field from the RightPress custom fields add on.

    It’s quite ugly out of the box before you click on it (similar to the stock one on your reviews add on), but it does have a nice progress bar and feedback for the user if the upload was successful.

    I styled it using this guide to make it look better

    I’m sure there’s probably a better solution or a library that you can use, but the whole upload experience could really do with a big overhaul.

    I admire your effort to take care of images with Amazon S3, but to be serious about SEO we need access to rename the image files, change titles and alt attributes etc. Which I imagine is best done when the images are hosted on the site’s server itself and within the WP content management system.

    This add on is a wonderful way to get users to upload images, which can be renamed and alt tagged for SEO, so I hope this is something you can address soon.

    Why was my last post moderated and deleted?

    I included some examples of other good uploaders, that’s weird.

    I was saying that XenForo has a really good one that you can try. If you register on their forum you can try it out in their test forum.

    It gives the user a preview of the image before they submit the post.
    You can also delete the image before submitting and attach another one if you made a mistake.

    Deleting it deletes it from the server too, which the rightpress one doesn’t do in my example above.

    Thanks for using our plugin and the suggestion about image uploader.

    Image upload is a difficult topic. We have received many tickets that even basic upload of images often doesn’t work. The most common reason is server settings on shared hosting that prevent upload of medium or large files.

    For this reason, we implemented upload of images on aggregated review forms (that are hosted on our server) and decided to put further developments for WordPress based image upload on hold. It doesn’t really worth efforts to improve upload functionality, if it won’t work for the majority of users anyway.

    Thanks for replying Ivole.

    I understand your difficulties with shared hosting, and that will always be an issue, but that shouldn’t prevent such a key feature and selling point of your add on being so limited and basic for those who do have capable hosting and want full control over their images and data for SEO and privacy purposes and to be able to manage the images from within WordPress.

    As it stands, with no progress bar, the UI for uploading is very poor as the user doesn’t know if the page is hanging or it’s just taking a long time for the images to upload.

    It doesn’t feel like a modern plugin the way the upload currently works. I would urge to you reconsider checking out flow js or something similar.

    You could make it a selling point for your premium version, I think it would make an attractive proposition for those that can afford decent hosting, take their SEO and user data seriously and are therefore willing to pay for the premium version of your plugin to get that feature.
