• I cant help but notice the explosion of support requests dealing with Googles recaptcha. There are hundreds of posts and comments dealing with it, most of them not happy.

I’m not saying throw it away – if that’s the direction you are going in, great, but please put back the option for ReallySimpleCaptcha – it worked.

Over the years i have donated to both projects as they were really worth while, I would have to say that today I will be looking for a new contact form. google is not a suitable option for three reasons.

1 – not everyone has or wants a google account. Forcing membership of a third party provider so your product becomes useable is a huge put off.

2 – Getting repactcha results from google adds a lot of latency in the round trip. It may be okay in some parts of the world but for us we measure times to google as over 250ms

3 – it adds in a layer of failure – if google or its local CDN fail our form fails. I personally hate having any reliance on functionality i cannot control – it means I cannot guarantee any level of service. today for example drop box (CDN hosted in singapore I believe) has been failing regularly. As a result cloud services relying on it are failing. As they are only test services, who cares – but it is another reminder to me to keep my list of failure points low and controllable. google is neither of these.

Is there any way to still use ReallySimpleCaptcha?

  • I’d just dump the Captcha stuff. I use Anti-spam which works great to catch all the bots and then Akismet to handle to human stuff that gets past.
