    Over a year ago I shared with the forum my experience as managing editor for a syndicating community blog. Given the large amounts of text I copy in as a single unit, the Gutenberg block editor was a nightmare to work with so I switched to the Classic Editor plugin.
    Now, I’m also helping edit a WP.com blog where I have no choice but to use the block editor. I’ve learned all kinds of new skills and formats in the past year, but the block editor takes so many of my options and shortcuts away from me, if anything I dislike using it more as I understand how it works better.
    For example, when I need to add an em dash or superscript number (which is nearly daily), I have to paste it in from somewhere else because the “special characters” option is just not there. Surely WP isn’t trying to make such useful symbols obsolete.
    While I long for the day WP.com will decide the block editor is old fashioned, I ask that just enough attention continues to maintain the Classic Editor for me to do my job without daily frustrations and wasted time.

    It’s there in the “classic block” of the block editor.

    The Paragraph block has super and subscript options right in its dropdown:

    For typing special characters, learn to use your operating system. On Windows at least, the WIN key + Period will bring up the special character input box, which has emojis and gifs and such, but also has “Special Characters”, including the EM-Dash as well as many others:

    Mac has something similar, and of course all phones do as well. In the end, typing in normal characters isn’t a function of the editor, it’s a function of the keyboard and operating system you’re using. The editor accepts unicode inputs just fine, including those characters. You don’t need to paste them in, you need to learn how to input them normally on your system.
