Well these forums use bbPress…

I know, thats a good sign!
But since so many important developers are leaving it, it just seems like the start of a real bad downwards spiral. I think BBPress deserves some support and good words spread about them now. Thats all I wanna do. Greatest forum software ever!!!!

bbPress is simply the best forum software, if someone wants an easy to use and to understand, not bloated and performant forum. I’m using bbPress for more than two years now (it is a small german artist’s board), and it rocks great. My own usage is the reason why I’m doing a german translation of bbPress.

To this great software slowly dying hurts. There are alternatives (and I checked out some of them), but nothing that simple, elegant and fine. The point of stagnation, the for months unfixed minor bugs, the lasting headless state of the bbPress project is death. That bbPress is still in use for the WP support forum does not give me and does not give anyone else out there a consolation.

If ever an important, leading developer will leave the WordPress project, how many days the project will remain headless? Not that many days, I think — everything would be done to make sure that WordPress is a software which is still worked on. That’s the difference between a living and a dead project. And the next severe security problem of bbPress (there is no software without bugs, and there are millions of subjects exploiting bugs) will be noted as COD on the death certificate. But the real COD is the current indifference.

bbPress is the best forum software and I always recommend it to anyone asking for forum platform advice. WordPress and bbPress are perfect companions, it would be a shame to stop developing it.

Let’s keep it alive and thriving. bbPress deserves a long bright future, and a short transition phase to a lead developer. It is unique, elegant, simple, flexible. It has it all.

I agree that bbpress is the best forum software for those who want to keep their forum simple and elegant, with wordpress.

I also want the bbpress survive and move to better and the best.

I’m afraid you think wrong. A few years back, several major contributors took off and decided they’d work on Habari instead. WP survived…

Point is, there is already a large BBPress community waiting for it to move forwards. Things have pretty much been standing still for the past months, with the only news being of people dropping out of the project.

Several plugins are not even compitable with the newest version, bugs aren’t fixed and people don’t always get the help they need anymore. At the moment, the whole project doesnt seem so solid.

Yeah, but WP wasn’t headless. bbPress lost Sam (the lead dev) and _ck_ (pretty much the best and most reliable mod around). This would be akin to … Matt and Otto leaving WP. Only worse, since there aren’t as many devs working on bbPress as there are on WP.

bbPress is in a holding pattern. Hopefully WP 2.9 won’t break it, but it’s a little sad, since it’s a great bit of code.

If it does, you can be pretty sure it’ll quickly get fixed, since it’s used on wp.com.

I do not think it’ll get much new features going forward, however.

I left a note in the bbpress forum, as I can allocate a few hours per week on it without much trouble — its code base isn’t that different from WP, and I was planning to install it on semiologic.com. But I’ve no idea of what’ll come out of it, and I sincerely cannot picture myself doing this single-handedly.

As for bbPress being ‘fixed’ if WP 2.9 breaks it … Maybe. Only if it’s integration related. And even then, it may be a private fix. I can’t be sure the fix will be publicly released. This version here isn’t the same as you download, last I checked.

_CK_ should be motivated to stay with the project. I understand her giving up, but if some other serious programmers started to get into this, I bet it would be inspiring. Working alone is not fun.

I strongly agree bbpress is best forum application.
Like they says, “Code is Poetry” and they did it.

Sh*t, a**, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k. This is absolutely not a constructive post, but the fact that these devs and mostly that _ck_ leaved upsets me a lot. She was so helpful, great, clan and to the point, AH SH*T! Sad.

I wanted to love bbpress. I love wordpress and can do so much with it that I had extremely high hopes for bbpress. But it lacked the elegance of wordpress behind the scenes, and without that, what was the point? Its just another piece of forum software, and not as flexible as others out there. You couldn’t integrate your wordpress and bbpress themes; and theming in bbpress was extremely limited because there was too much html mixed in with the actual core code. If you wanted to make a truely unique them, you had to edit files you had no business editing, and that would likely break on future upgrades. The html used was a poorly constructed hodge-podge of tables and table-less. Overall it was an entirely disappointing piece of software.
