• I didn’t even have an account here but I had to register to add my voice to the massive majority who say NO this is NOT ready for primetime, not by a longshot.

I was greeted by the notice on my dashboard which makes it sound immediate that this is going to be added to the WordPress core. So I gave it a try and am shocked and disgusted with it.

It’s way too complicated. The current editor is great because it is intuitive and simple and you can easily write, publish, and be done. The new editor is much too difficult to use and makes it hard to get to the code behind the page. It makes it hard to do everything. It needs to be massively reworked and not change the editing page so much. The fact that there is an extra click to even switch to the document tab shows that something is wrong, the publish options should always be available, and I would argue the Featured Image should as well, without collapsing into tabs.

This needs MAJOR work and revisions to even be close to being forced upon users. And if it is thurst upon users regardless, well, maybe Joomla! is going to be the better CMS.

@starcrescendo first, thanks for testing and taking the effort to leave a review by creating an account. Could I ask, do you use any theme or plugin combination right now to build pages? I would love to also find out more about your current workflow as it’s great to learn from those the existing editor is working for.

    Hi Tammie,

I personally don’t use any of those page-builder things because they usually end up making messy code for me and my clients that just leads to headaches down the road when a div gets broken, or an ending div tag gets invalidly nested and then the client doesn’t know how to fix it.

I have found the biggest benefit of WordPress has always been that it was so clean and focused on content without any of the hassle of other things getting in the way. It was literally choose ‘Add’ a content type, type a title and message, and hit publish.

With the building blocks system, it is a great way to allow users to add columns and such which are tasks usually above their understanding, but it should be much less intrusive and more intuitive than this Gutenberg plugin was.

I personally use Yootheme’s “UIKIT” (not the Yootheme PRO template builder) to power my own client sites.

I honestly don’t know how to make the current system more intuitive but it just wasn’t. I gave it a few hours, a fair bit of playing around with it, and as a developer looking at it through a client’s eyes, it was confusing and finnicky, and as mentioned it also hides the publish button which is a big no-no as far as ease of use goes.
