• I am too scared to do my update because I do not have child theme. I don’t even know what that means, except that someone told me when I update wp it will mess up what is already set up if I don’t have it.

Please, please out of the goodness of your heart, can somebody please walk me through it? I have read other posts and I cannot understand what anyone is talking about..eek:). Please.

Have you modified theme files (i.e. style.css or .php files under Appearance > Editor) on your current site? If not, updating should not be a problem.

If so, you will need to move any changes to the child theme – just creating one doesn’t do that.

    What theme are you using?

OK… I don’t even know what this means:). I am really UN-knowledgeable about this. I don’t know if any themes have been modified? Somebody set this up for me and then offhandedly told me something about a child theme. Should I update and see if anything has changed and then is there a way to go back and fix things? I don’t even know what css or php means (it’s ok to laugh at me:).

This is what it says on the bottom of my web site:
    Theme: Coraline by Automattic

The first thing you should do at this point is backup your entire site
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Backups

Definitely don’t update until you’ve done that – if files are overwritten, they are not recoverable unless you have a backup.

    After I answered above, I remembered we’d had a long exchange previously – https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/please-help-my-whole-blog-is-centered?replies=34

It looks like the theme has been modified…

But it also looks like you have the current version of the theme – are you getting a message to update it?

Yes we have chatted before! (meaning, yes you have saved me before). So to do a back-up…. this might be a dumb question. I scanned through the article you sent. So doing a back-up- does that mean I am copying and pasting something into word and then saving it onto my computer? Is there a way to just click on a plugin and let it do a back-up for me?

This is the message I am getting:
WordPress 3.6.1 is available! Please update now.

    Thread Starter kidworldcitizen

    (@kidworldcitizen)

For example, if I get this:

UpdraftPlus – WordPress Backup and Restoration
Easy and complete backups + restoration. Manual or automated backups (Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google Drive, Rackspace, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, email + others).

Is it possible to have too many plug-ins? I have a lot. Is that bad?

    Cool it’s backing it up.

OK- so it is backed up! ??

Okay great – I’m just about to go off on a run (sorry, my dad’s waiting for me) – but we can pick this up in an hour or so…
