• Hi, I’m a new user and just wanted to start blogging but am getting lost in hosts and code etc! And now my Dashboard options on the sidebar of the Admin page have disappeared so I can’t even create a new post.

Can anyone offer me some advice on how to fix this? When I google to try and work it out it’s all about accessing code lines that I can’t find.

    Thanks in advance,

    Karen

  • Hi there. Sounds as if you have hit the collapse button at the bottom of the dashboard icons. Can you describe what you can see – is it a list of icons on the left hand side running top to bottom? If it is – can you see a icon at the bottom showing a triangle inside a circle? Looks like the play button on a DVD player… If you can, click on the triangle and your text menu’s should reappear. Generally, if you are happy with the defaults in 2017 theme there should be no need to get involved in many code issues so you should be able to be blogging without stress.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply. The left hand side used to have options on it like Blog and then I could choose to write a new post. Now it shows Dashboard; Profile and then Collapse. When I click collapse it then goes to a thin black strip along the edge. Right in the top corner it used to say the name of my page and when you hovered over it I could choose view site or edit.

    Any ideas?

I really need to see what you are seeing to try & understand the issue. Is there any way you can take a screen print and send me a link? https://snag.gy is a free service that allows you to upload a screen print and share the link. That way I would be able to see the exact issue and hopefully help.

    Hi,

Here is the link to my dashboard. I miss all those lovely words that you have on yours ??

Can you think of any way to get the sidebar options back?

Thanks so much for your advice so far,

    Karen

Hi Karen, is this your site, or a site you’re a member on? It looks like your user account is a subscriber, which is the lowest user level and restricts access to the rest of the dashboard.

If this is your site, you probably have another user account on your site that’s an admin. Can you remember another username you might have?

If this site belongs to someone else, you’ll want to contact the site admin to get higher access restored.

Hi Mel, thanks so much for getting back to me I’m going round in circles so much I’m tying myself in knots now.

This is my site, I’d logged in separately to the forums as couldn’t get my web address log-in to work on here. I use tryingtobegutsy as the user account.

It looks like you do have more than one user account on your website. The posts that exist are using the username “admin.” Could you log out, and try logging back in with the username “admin” and your password?

If your password doesn’t work, you can also reset it from the login screen.

Oh my gosh!!! You are incredible!! Just managed to work out how to get in to the admin account, I really need to stop doing things late at night, I have no recollection of setting up another account and I’ve given it a picture and everything :-/

Thank you so much for sorting that for me ??

Any idea how I remove the /wp from my web address too?? I do ask a lot I know!

Awesome! I’m glad you were able to get back into the right user account.

I’d recommend deleting that other user account for security. You can do this by going to your “Users” menu in the sidebar, and clicking “All Users.” Then, hover over your “tryingtobegutsy” user account and click the “Delete” link that appears. (If it takes you to another screen, you can just click “okay” to get through it.)

As for removing /wp — do you know what web host you’re using for your website, offhand?

It’s mocha hosting that I’ve got the domain on.

Thank you so much for the step by step way to get rid of the other account, I’ll do that now.
