• Hi guys! I need some help getting rid of popups that I didn’t ask for! Here’s the website in question: https://thehighlandernews.com

    Story behind all this:

I used to be the web admin of my high school’s newssite (which runs on WP) until I graduated 2 years ago. After I left, some kid took over my position and decided to hide his own google ad code all over the site during the year, profiting off of a SCHOOL WEBSITE. He graduated now and has left his code all over the website I painstakingly built in my junior year of high school, and my journalism teacher is also pissed. He’s not responding to any attempts to contact him.

I already got rid of the google ads he put up, but he has popups on the site that I don’t know how to get rid of. Any suggestions?

    Things I already tried:
searching for keywords “adsense” and “google” and “click”
    switching themes
deactivating all plugins and seeing if the popups leave. (They didn’t.)

I appreciate your help in advance! Hopefully we can get this solved before the school year really kicks into motion. ??

Unfortunately, they could be buried rather deep. The process will be similar to cleaning up a hack, technically it could even have been a hack rather than the student.

Remain calm and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.
