• So if anyone could help me that would be great… I’m pretty sure I just effed my wordpress page.

I was in my WP-admin page and saw the “update to version 2.6” at the top of the screen, so i downloaded it, unzipped, read the read-me; it told me to go to my home directory and delete all wp files except the ones changed, I did so, then put in the new word press files, “pointed” my browser at the wp-admin/upgrade.php and the blank web page with the wordpress logo came up… k so good right?

Well then I tried to log in and it didn’t work, so heres where I think I made a mistake; I re-downloaded WP v.2.6 and replaced EVERYTHING in my home directory with the new files and it asked me to set up wp-config.php like when I first installed WP! Then I tried recopying the files into home directory and now it does nothing… I type in my web address and just my home directory comes up with no wp files and I cant access WP-ADMIN!

    please help! What did I do?/what can I do?/what should I do???!!!!

FYI– this was the first time I’ve tried to update my WP and I started this whole thing off pretty web stupid, and I still am but I’m picking up on a lot.
    Thanks for any help
    –Jeff

  • most important question — do you have a backup of your wp-config.php ? If not, you will need to recreate one.

the rest is just a matter of uploading files (properly).

fwiw, you need to really do more than reads the readme — you ought to be looking over this:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended#Overview_of_the_Upgrade_Process

Nothing, anywhere tells you to delete wp-config.php

yeah I have my wp-cofig.php file…. but i got frustrated and I deleted all the files so I could just start over, put all new wp files in home directory, then added the wp-config file I had saved, and now when I try to go to my site nothing happens. My site doesn’t come up or it doesn’t me to config… I don’t know what to do…

and I think something went wrong when I tried to go to the upgrade link.. cause it didn’t give me instructions or anything like that, it just gave me a blank page with the wordpress logo in the upper left hand corner and a “>”.

“nothing happens” .. thats a pretty vague phrase. Perhaps you would like to elaborate.

    Something always happens.

put all new wp files in home directory

thats NOT where WP goes. WordPress goes inside a web accessible directory, ie public_html

the rest is just a matter of uploading files (properly).

like when I type in my address just a blank page comes up, not even my home directory.

    you could try it…

Look at that? I can tell you that you have NOT uploaded the files properly.

the rest is just a matter of uploading files (properly).

    Same there ..

    This is Internet 101.

yeah I realize that but I guess thats what I’m saying is I don’t know what I did wrong… I thought I uploaded the files the same way as I did the first time.

I thought I uploaded the files the same way as I did the first time.

    You didnt.

    thanks…
    thats very helpful…

its about as helpful as anyone can be given the info you have provided.

The structure of the zip is self-explantory — it unpacks into a folder named wordpress, there are 3 directories inside that one, and numerous more directories nested inside of those.

Uploading properly means you upload ALL the files, maintaining th directory structure you see inside that wordpress folder.

Its pretty tough to over much beyond that — especially when its fairly clear thats where you failed.

    (@wickje)

yeah I realize all that, and what I’m telling you is that I did all that, and I don’t really care if all you can say is

I thought I uploaded the files the same way as I did the first time.

    You didnt.

I know what I did and clearly you can’t help, so stop trying to make ME feel stupid for something YOU can’t understand. I’ve looked at other posts you’ve replied to, for some reason your idea of help is stating the obvious, then proceeding to belittle people and make them feel stupid because they can’t figure all this “simple” stuff out; which is only “simple” to people that spend all their time in front of a computer screen, remember you had to start somewhere too, and thats just what we’re all trying to do.
If calling your self the Simon Cowell of wordpress makes you feel better then thats fine, just do us a favor and don’t respond to any of my posts anymore.
And thanks for “friendly support service” I’ve herd about from www.ads-software.com.

Did you disable plugins before your upgrade? Quite often the blank screens are because of plugins that have stopped working.

Anyway, you need to re-upload the files, and replace wp-config.php with your original wp-config.php (add in the new secret key lines if you want.)

wickje, you were on your way to fixing it before, you just had not uploaded all of the files.. youve since deleted what files were there, and now all of those directories I referenced above are empty.

And yes, I am sorry, this is simple. When you can direct your browser to a directory and see a list of 10 or so files, when there is supposed to be 30+ and some subdirectories, the problem is fairly obvious.

Getting belligerent isnt going to upload the missing files.
