  • I agree with ianslater. Simple tags should be updated. It provides good internal links and tag suggestion. Please update!

yes, I was thinking of trying it out but I think I will wait for news of 3.5 compatability.

This is a great plugin, but impacts in about 30% of the loadtime of all my websites. If an update could be done to optimize that….

The latest version is supposed to improve performance! Try it!

I also created a ticket on the tracker, I’ll try to change the replacement mechanism … to have better performance.

Hi there Amaury. Your plugin is awesome but it could perform much better with some performance fine tuning.

I’m using the P3 Profiler plugin to investigate the performance of my websites, and Simple Tags have been marked as one of the culprits of several miliseconds of degraded performance. I ran again the profiler with Simple Tags’ today update and the result is still the same. It’s working slow.

Below I paste the last plugin performance report from one of my sites using Simple Tags. The figures for your plugin are almost similar in all of them:

    Plugin list:
    ===========================================
    P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) – 0.0036 sec – 0.80%
    404 Redirected – 0.0362 sec – 8.09%
    Ad Manager For Wp – 0.0055 sec – 1.24%
    Akismet – 0.0035 sec – 0.78%
    BackWPup – 0.0200 sec – 4.46%
    Broken Link Checker – 0.0258 sec – 5.77%
    Cache Images – 0.0016 sec – 0.35%
    Changelogger – 0.0034 sec – 0.76%
    Editorial Calendar – 0.0005 sec – 0.10%
    Facebook Recommendations Bar – 0.0059 sec – 1.32%
    Feedburner Feedsmith Plugin 2.3 – 0.0041 sec – 0.91%
    Iwp Client – 0.0290 sec – 6.48%
    jQuery Colorbox – 0.0182 sec – 4.08%
    Lazy Load – 0.0039 sec – 0.87%
    NoSpamNX – 0.0019 sec – 0.41%
    Ps Auto Sitemap – 0.0029 sec – 0.66%
    Revision Control – 0.0027 sec – 0.59%
    Sexybookmarks – 0.0323 sec – 7.22%
    Simple Tags – 0.1139 sec – 25.48%
    Subscribe to Comments Reloaded – 0.0018 sec – 0.41%
    Wordfence Security – 0.0346 sec – 7.73%
    Wordpress Seo – 0.0422 sec – 9.44%
    WP-Memory-Usage – 0.0138 sec – 3.09%
    Wp Super Cache – 0.0068 sec – 1.52%
    WPtouch – 0.0332 sec – 7.42%

I’m aware your plugin is not the only one performing slow, but it’s truly the slower, taking its time execution almost 26% of the load time.

Should I consider this to be normal or may be improved in future upgrades?

Do you want a copy of my plugin config for Simple Tags? tell me the field in the db table and I’ll copy it here, since it don’t disclose sensitive info, I guess.

    Best regards

OK, you can disable the feature autolinks and restart P3 Profiler ?

Hi, disabled auto links feature. Testing again. Very impressive improvement. The results:

    Plugin list:
    ===========================================
    P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) – 0.0037 sec – 0.89%
    404 Redirected – 0.0150 sec – 3.58%
    Ad Manager For Wp – 0.0056 sec – 1.33%
    Akismet – 0.0036 sec – 0.86%
    BackWPup – 0.0193 sec – 4.63%
    Broken Link Checker – 0.0294 sec – 7.03%
    Cache Images – 0.0018 sec – 0.43%
    Changelogger – 0.0005 sec – 0.11%
    Facebook Recommendations Bar – 0.0076 sec – 1.81%
    Feedburner Feedsmith Plugin 2.3 – 0.0043 sec – 1.03%
    Iwp Client – 0.0312 sec – 7.47%
    Jetpack Post Views – 0.0232 sec – 5.55%
    Jetpack por WordPress.com – 0.0750 sec – 17.95%
    jQuery Colorbox – 0.0077 sec – 1.84%
    Lazy Load – 0.0041 sec – 0.98%
    NoSpamNX – 0.0020 sec – 0.47%
    Ps Auto Sitemap – 0.0032 sec – 0.76%
    Revision Control – 0.0028 sec – 0.67%
    Sexybookmarks – 0.0338 sec – 8.08%
    Simple Tags – 0.0077 sec – 1.84%
    Wordfence Security – 0.0360 sec – 8.60%
    Wordpress Seo – 0.0399 sec – 9.55%
    WP-Memory-Usage – 0.0143 sec – 3.42%
    Wp Super Cache – 0.0069 sec – 1.65%
    WPtouch – 0.0396 sec – 9.47%

oh, BTW, notice that the website being checked is using WP SuperCache with CDN for image files at Amazon Cloudfront.

Very impressive. This website have 829 tags, I know, analyzing such an amount of information takes time, and saving the posts with the autolinking done it’s not a real solution because it may pose a problem in the future if the owner decide to delete tags or simply rename the slug, or rename the tag permalink. So, if I want the autolinks, this delay is normal? No workarounds? ??

ok, hope to see an update regarding this anytime soon ??

Anyway, I wonder that having such a great list of tags (800+), will be hard to scan post by post in the homepage. One thing I can think of, is to PLAINLY AVOID auto terms in the index pages. That way you improve performance by no looping every post in the index pages for home, categories, tags, archives and other formats. If the auto terms would be limited to be done ONLY in the post page, I guess the overall performance of the site would increase. Even more, it could be an option in the settings page of this plugin and I guess it should not be so hard to code, right? What do you think?

You will find a version 2.3.2 beta on Github
    https://github.com/herewithme/simple-tags

Download it and retry your benchmark ??
    Thank you!

Well, I’ve tested your 2.3.2 beta and…. it worked great! Performance have improved now.

    Plugin list:
    ===========================================
    P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) – 0.0038 sec – 0.86%
    404 Redirected – 0.0118 sec – 2.64%
    Ad Manager For Wp – 0.0057 sec – 1.28%
    Akismet – 0.0040 sec – 0.90%
    BackWPup – 0.0237 sec – 5.31%
    Broken Link Checker – 0.0281 sec – 6.29%
    Cache Images – 0.0017 sec – 0.39%
    Changelogger – 0.0005 sec – 0.12%
    Facebook Recommendations Bar – 0.0098 sec – 2.20%
    Feedburner Feedsmith Plugin 2.3 – 0.0043 sec – 0.97%
    Iwp Client – 0.0312 sec – 7.00%
    Jetpack Post Views – 0.0253 sec – 5.68%
    Jetpack por WordPress.com – 0.0753 sec – 16.88%
    jQuery Colorbox – 0.0192 sec – 4.31%
    Lazy Load – 0.0044 sec – 0.99%
    NoSpamNX – 0.0019 sec – 0.44%
    Ps Auto Sitemap – 0.0031 sec – 0.70%
    Revision Control – 0.0029 sec – 0.64%
    Sexybookmarks – 0.0382 sec – 8.56%
    Simple Tags – 0.0153 sec – 3.43%
    Wordfence Security – 0.0358 sec – 8.04%
    Wordpress Seo – 0.0385 sec – 8.63%
    WP-Memory-Usage – 0.0141 sec – 3.17%
    Wp Super Cache – 0.0072 sec – 1.63%
    WPtouch – 0.0399 sec – 8.94%

Now I probably need to work with JetPack people and see how to improve its performance, since now their plugin is the slowest haha

    Good job man!

    Hi Amaury Balmer,

First thing, thanks because I think your plugin is the best for managing taxonomies.

Second thing, since updating from 2.2 to 2.3 the auto-completion stopped working properly (also why do you say that 2.2 is not compatible with WP 3.5? it works great for me ?? )
Anyway basically the problem is that when you first type let’s say 5-6 letters it gives you the first suggestions that match the search, but then if you add another letter for example then the auto-completion gets stuck, the circle keep loading and no more suggestions are displayed.

Since I have a pretty big database I thought that it could have been caused by too many tags in the DB (about 4k) so I did some cleaning, I used the functionality of cleaning the rarely used ones and reduced the number of tags to 1700 but still I have this problem.

If I revert to 2.2 all go back to normality, I tried also the 2.3.2 beta but still I have this problem.

    Anybody has the same issue?

I’m also having the same problem as dud86.

Can anyone give me guidance on how I can roll back to version 2.2?

    Hey RPL,

It’s actually pretty easy, just download the 2.2 version from here https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/simple-tags.2.2.zip

Then in the WP admin area, disable and delete the current plugin, and install the new one through the option of uploading a zip file rather than browsing the plugin repository.

    Hope it makes sense.

    Fabio

    Hi Fabio

Many thanks for responding so quickly, much appreciated!
