Thanx for the help, but…
I set “mbstring.func_overload” = 0 in php.ini, but there was no change (still get the same error). “mbstring.func_overload” was commented out in the default php installation.

I installed WP-3.0.1 on my desktop machine (localhost) running apache (with xampp). Did the so-called 5 minute install.

the problem is with your server set up, so i’d suggest doing a few google searches.

Well I still don’t know why I was getting that error but, I just downloaded the zip for DB Backup, unzipped it, and put it in wordpress/wp-content/plugins. Now it works.

I temporarily gave up on “Maintenance Mode” because the download details included this comment:

Warning: This plugin has not been tested with your current version of WordPress.

Incompatible Archive. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Invalid block size : 40

the problem was solved when I removed

mbstring.func_overload = “7”

from my PHP.INI and it workes now!
