Today, I changed the permalink structure on my blog. The blog is fairly new with fewer than 10 posts. After changing permalinks, I cannot open old posts and get an error message that “sorry, no posts match your criteria” message.

I installed Advanced Permalinks plug-in and carefully followed instruction but it has not worked. It changed the permalink url, but I still cannot open the old posts. To compound the problem, I also cannot open new posts. I get an error message (sorry, no posts match your criteria) for all my old and new messages.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello RMG Homes,
It sounds like your Permalinks are not set properly. Since you didn’t share a link, it is hard to know the cause. However, there are a couple of things you can try, but before doing any of the following, please back up your website and Database:
    1. Make sure that you have the right Permalink settings required by the plugin to be able to function properly (check the installation notes). You might need to disable the Permalinks from the admin Panel (Settings–>Permalinks, “Default”) or set it to a specific option for the plugin to work.
    2. Check each one of your posts’ Permalinks one by one (open them in the Admin Post Editor), to make sure they are up to date and that they follow the Permalink structure you chose. Sometimes posts’ Permalinks don’t get updated or break after playing with the Permalinks’ structure.
    3. Check if it plugin-related. Deactivate the plugin following the instructions provided by the developer: you might be experiencing an incompatibility issue with other plugins already installed;
    4. Once the plugin is deactivated, try playing with the Permalinks structure from the admin panel): Set it back to “Default” (unless it is already set that way) and then to any other structure (“Day and Name,” “Month and Name,” “Numeric,” or “Custom”), and see if that fixes the issue.
    5. If the issue is fixed, try re-enabling the plugin (following instructions, same as before): if the Permalinks break again, it is plugin-related. If it works, you can ‘hip hip hurrah’ me, ??

Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

    Hi Marventus,

Thanks for the assistance. We will follow the steps as you’ve recommended. The link to our site is https://www.rmgworld.com Hopefully, the link will reveal the cause of the problem. Again, thank you.

Yeah, I get the same behavior when I open your website.
There’s definitely an issue with the plugin or your posts’ Permalinks, because your pages work just fine.
Considering that you do not have a very complex Permalink structure for your posts (the one you have is “Day and Name”), I would really consider getting rid of the plugin all together, and then trying to fix the Permalinks. That should do the trick.
    Cheers!

I managed to fix to the problem. First let me clarify what was wrong. Secondly, I will explain what worked for me.

The problem was I changed the permalink structure for a website that had existing posts. As a result, the pretty permalinks no longer worked for my posts although they continued to worked for pages. For posts, I would receive a message that said “sorry, no posts match your criteria.” I installed the Advanced Permalinks plugin but it was not helpful.

THE FIX: The following are the steps I took to fix the problem

    1. I went to plugin menu and disabled the Advanced Permalinks plugin.

    2. I followed Marventus’s advice and reset the Permalinks from pretty permalinks back to the ugly to default (Settings–>Permalinks, “Default”)

    3. I checked each one of my posts to see if they opened. They all opened but they had the ugly non-SEO friendly default url. I checked each of my pages and discovered that the pretty permalinks were no longer working for pages. They pages and posts had ugly, non-SEO friendly url’s.

    4. I went back to Settings and changed the permalink structure to custom structure and inserted the new pretty permalink structure (Settings–>Permalinks, Custom)

    5. I checked each of my posts and pages. They were all working again with the custom pretty permalinks.

Marventus, thanks for your help with this. A helpful link: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/permalinks-not-working-how-to-restore?replies=14

    Hi RMG Homes,
I’m glad you were able to figure it out, and that everything is working the way it is supposed to!
Let me know if you experience any other problems with the Permalinks.
    Best,

    M

BTW, I forgot to ask you that, since you were able to figure this out, if you could please mark the thread as resolved.

    Thanks!
