I know that Internet Explorer 6 has its fair share of problems, especially with regard to standards compliance (I’m sure we’ve all been there), but this plugin is pointless!

IE 8 has just been released and most Windows home users will receive it via Windows Update, which we all hope they haven’t disabled.
Then, there’s the other group of people who either aren’t allowed to upgrade their Internet Explorer installation because they’re using it in a corporate environment, or simply opted out from newer versions due to their own personal, weird reasons.

I therefore doubt that this plugin will make anyone upgrade from IE or use another browser. Why would you even want to require people to do that just for your little blog? You had better spent the time making sure that your design works somewhat in IE 6 than wasting time with this …

    Pointless. In my opinion.

  • I disagree with you, just like more than 220 other bloggers that already downloaded this plugin after a few days, which make it the one most downloaded from the list of new entries.

The problem with ie6 is simply that still 20% of the people that surf the web (Number comes from iedeathmarch.com) are using it. If they’d all upgrade to ie7 or ie8 I’d agree with you, but as long as there are still so many ie6-users, I see a purpose for this plugin.

I don’t know why people keep their old ie6. I can only think of three possible reasons:

    1. They don’t want to upgrade (Don’t ask me why)
    2. They don’t know why they should upgrade or even worse: They don’t even know that there is an upgrade (I am talking about computer beginners here)
    3. They are to lazy

I can’t help user no. 1 but maybe my plugin can convince no. 2 and even no. 3.
If there is only one ie6 user that switches to a better browser, this plugin definately was not pointless.

There are so many reasons why people shouldn’t use ie6 like

    • Security issues
    • Lack of modern css functions
    • Poor usability (No tabs, no private browsing and so on…)
    • Low Javascript functionality

.. just to name a few.

These problems makes it more difficult to build websites than it should be.
It’s crazy that you actually have to use IE-hacks to make your site work in ie6, only cause of this one browser, where every other webbrowser causes no trouble after all.

Ie6 needs to die. The sooner, the better.

I force noone to install it, if he/she doesn’t want to but I’d appreciate it.

Hello, I’ve translated this plugin in french ’cause I think we’re responsible if IE6 continue to living in the web. When I say “we”, I want say “Webmasters and Bloggers Community”.
If we explain the various problems of this old, slowy and unsecure browser to ours visitors they assume their responsabilities and upgrade IE or testing another one.
In ’99 when I adviced to an user to install an antivirus, he said: “Why? Windows is super stable…”, in 2009 there is no one to ask “Why should I install an antivrus?”
The mentalities changes and we’re responsible of this (a little), could we do the same thing with the browsers? I don’t know but personally I’ll continue to try:-)

    Hey,

I wrote the Drupal-Plugin, that does the redirection for IE6 users. As you surely can imagine, I don’t think, this campain is pointless.

You are right, that there are two groups of users, still surfing the web with IE6: home and business. Some of them aren’t allowed to upgrade, mostly in larger companies. If the web get’s more and more unusable for many employees, policies will change.

Home users, who don’t want to use a different browser are better redirected, than presented a buggy website. Home users, who aren’t aware of using an outdated browser get the information they need for an upgrade or the switch to a different browser.

As wolforg, I’ll continue to support this campain, to be sure to use any instrument we have, to get rid of this rubbish browser.

I love the plugin! It’s great.
    Thanks a lot !!

Thank you so very much for this plugin IE6 is still 23% of the market share as of Nov 2009!

I just did a site, and the deadline was so tight and there was no budget to do more browser testing and tweaks for IE6. So rather than having a half hearted attempt, I just put a message up there for IE6 users letting them know that the IE6 version is on the way, but if they want to see it now, they should upgrade their browser.

I didn’t use the plugin, but nice little idea.

Valmar, I think the reason that some do not upgrade to a newer version of internet explorer is because they have pirated copies of the OS. They are either afraid to update because they think the FBI will be on their doorstep or the Microsoft Genuine whatever-it-is stops them.

I love this plug in!!! ??

Great that you like it ??

The pirate-guys could at least download Firefox or sth. though ??
