• I’m really new to webpage creation (really have to work to edit code or add things), so I apologize for asking something that will probably be obvious to most.

I installed the Author Avatar plugin, but I was hoping that it included some way to upload custom avatars for each author. My blog is about food, so I want different aprons to represent the authors. Do I need an additional plugin? I was afraid to just start downloading more plugins for fear they would conflict with each other.

Extract from Author Avatars List FAQ:

Can I upload custom pictures for users?

No, the Author Avatars List plugin only provides ways of displaying user avatars.

The plugin uses the WordPress Core Template function get_avatar() to retrieve the actual avatar images. In order to display custom images you need to look for plugins which use/override WordPress’ avatar features and provide respective upload features…

Have a look at the User Photo Plugin (turn on option “Override Avatar with User Photo”) or the Add Local Avatar Plugin.

I wrote a plugin that lets you have custom avatars throughout your blog only if your user doesn’t have a Gravatar (globally-recognized avatar) enabled. The images can be uploaded easily although they won’t stay tied to a particular author – rather, everyone who comments could have, for example, a food-related icon.
