  • Automatic backup didn’t work, but I had the Maintenance Plugin activated. I will now de-activate that plugin for 24 hrs and I expect the automatic backup will work.

    Tom – is 1.2 doesn’t have the option to choose backup frequency, then that’s is my suggestion for 1.3

    My other suggestion is to have clearer instructions on setting the defines (or make them part of the gui) Until you emailed me instructions I didn’t know they had to be like this –
    define( 'HMBKP_MAX_BACKUPS', 4 );

    Rob

    Interesting – the automatic backup occurred three times tonight after upgrading to the new version shortly before 11 ??

    Thanks for the suggestions rob, my plan is to eventually move to a gui for settings, I don’t want to do that until the core backup engine is robust though.

    Changing the schedule will be in 1.3 unless there are some major as yet undiscovered bugs that I end up having to address.

    Better documentation is definitely something I’m looking at.

    Chris, did the multiple backups thing only happen once, or are you getting 3 every day?

    Will let you know tonight! ??

    Also I’ll look into what it isn’t working with the maintenance plugin.

    fyi, this is the plugin I’m using, which has the same issues (no scheduled or manual backups made) as Stingraynut – although he’s using a different plugin.

    I deactivated maintenance mode and there were TWO automatic backups

    In WP they are dated May 7 2011 one at 7:52 & one at 23:40

    In C Panel the dates are 07-07=52-09 & 07-23-40-15

    Looking forward to 1.3 !!

    BTW I still have the earlier version of backupwordpress working on other sites, should I change back to this until everything is sorted?

    Rob

    (BTW Cairns Australia- in case the time differences matter)

    I deactivated my maintenance mode at 8pm, and immediately it took a backup (is it possible to tell the difference between an ‘automatic’ and ‘manual’ backup?). Then it took a backup at 11pm, as it was supposed to.

    I had a quick look at that maintenance plugin and can see that it would likely stop backupwordpress from working because it stops wp-cron.php from being pinged. I’ll email the author as I dont think it should block wp-cron.php by default.

    As a work around it looks like there is an option to specify paths to exclude, putting ‘wp-cron.php’ in the exclude box should fix things.

    Manual and automatic backups work the same way.

    With maintenance mode turned off ..

    Weird that the times in between automatic backups seem to vary – I’ll keep posting here!

    Hi Chris,

    The scheduled backups will happen at slightly different times as they rely on wp-cron to fire and wp-cron will only fire when someone visits the site.

    A more truthful description is that the scheduled backup will run the first time someone visits your site after your scheduled time has passed, if the first person to visit the site (that includes you) is 30 min after the schedule then the backup would start 30 min late.

    wow I didn’t realise the site needed a visitor to fire the backup – what happens if no-one visits?

    I guess then you could say there’s no need of a backup?

    I guess you could say that.

    Unfortunately thats just how the WordPress cron system works. You can setup a proper cron job to hit wp-cron.php at a regular interval if you want it to be on time.

    Just though I’d let you all know that the beta for 1.3 is at a point where it could do with some testing.

    You can download it here https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/backupwordpress.zip

    Some highlights.

    – Re-written backups engine, should be faster, more reliable and generally better (except for all the bugs you guys find).

    – Support for excluding files & folders, define HMBKP_EXCLUDES as a comma separated list.

    define( ‘HMBKP_EXCLUDES’, ‘wp-content/uploads, stats, webalizer’ );

    – Loads of other minor improvements.
