Hi, I have been using Bakcupwordpress 0.4.5 for many months. I was very satisfied with the backup functions and, most of all, with the option to send backup files by email. Unluckily I see that this option is missing in the new versions of the plugin.

Are you planning to restore this option? I guess it would be really useful for most of us.

    Regards

    Hi Simul,

Many thanks for using the BackUpWordPress plugin and for your feedback, I did remove the option in the current version as I wanted to strip out all non-essential functionality and focus on making the core feature (backing up) as robust as possible.

There is a definite possibility that I’ll bring sending backup files over email back at some point in the future.

    Hi Tom,

thank you for your prompt answer. So… I will look forward to see this functionality back.

I think that email sending is a good way to obtain an automatic “delocalization” of backup sets. In fact, if the administrator of the wordpress site forgets to download backup sets manually and a major failure occurs in the web server, all data could be lost.

    Thank you again!

    Hi Simul,

I totally agree, “de-localisation” is very important for backups and email would be the easiest way to enable it.

I also want to find a good solution for users whos backup files are too large to email which is often the case.

    Hi, Tom.

Any news on adding the e-mail config (and other) options to the plugin interface?

Manually adding plugin configuration info to the wp-config.php is really keeping me from upgrading, as that info would be lost after each and every WordPress update.

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Hi Alfonso,

We have it working internally but not in a form thats ready to be released.

However, updating WordPress won’t overwrite your wp-config.php so it’s perfectly safe to define your constants in there and upgrade.

You are right, the Codex clearly says so… Maybe I was just suffering flashbacks from the time when I updated WP using Fantastico in cPanel ??

Is there a launch date already set for the new interface?

    Cheers

Any news on sending backups by email automatically, Tom?

I added the functionality a couple of versions back, click advanced options and you’ll see.

    Didn’t see it ??
    Thanks for pointing it out.

I have it working now and it mailed a 6mb backup OK.

With the old plugin we could also set a maximum file size for emailed backups. It was a great feature to avoid sending emails that would bounce at the mail server.

Is this other functionality there and I missed it, too? Or is it planned at least?

    Cheers

You will see a warning in your admin if your backup is too large to email.

My mail server can send/receive attachments of up to 50mb, yet Gmail (25mb) and others have a much smaller limit. So “too large to email” varies depending on the email address you are mailing backups to.

Can you point me to where that maximum value is set?

There is no maximum size set, it just tries to send and if it fails at the sending then it shows an error.

If your backups are too big to email then whats the point of having the setting turned on?
