Even though it is no longer maintained, it still works with current WP versions. So I guess when it breaks, there’s always the “Members” plugin which pretty much has the exact same feature set, but is actively maintained.

Capability Manager Enhanced is also now available and supported (though I do not promise to answer every capability-related question that arises):
