The error “Data no accepted” is one sent back by the mail server, so the plugin actually made the connection to the SMTP server, but something else is not correct.

There are a multitude of reasons, some related to how the plugin is configured with respect to the mail server, and some related to some server-specific configurations. I’ll see if I can get the plugin to provide a more specific information about the error (if there is any to be had) to help you out.

Thanks… I migrate servers, that server was is a shared basis, too secure and too limited for my needs. I am sure it had all to do with the server, and support never came from them.

The funniest thing seems to be happening in the new server though… it does work, but… I have to tell the plug in to use PHP mail in order to use SMTP, and vice-versa!

Had you ever heard of anything similar, ever?

I haven’t heard of that logic inversion issue before. Are you using the latest version of the plugin? The most recent versions (v3.0+) don’t give you the option between using PHP mail or SMTP; if the plugin is activated then it will enable SMTP.

Regarding your original issue, I wouldn’t be surprised if your overly secure previous host had things too locked down.

I am trying to connect to gmail account and all settings appear correct

    smtp.gmail.com
    port 465
username and address of account entered into smtp uername and password field

This is the error I receive when I try to send a test email:

An error was encountered while trying to send the test e-mail.

SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.

    Failed to connect to server
    Connection refused

I am having the exact same problem as creativefield. Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Bump! -c-

I’m have the same issue as creativefield and chrisboggs. I installed configure smpt, to resolve an issue with buddypress not able to send out confirmation emails to new members. I want to send email to members from my gmail account.
