I tried using this with COnfigure_SMTP plugin. When I send a test message form the plugin it comes thorugh fine. When a message is sent via the contact form it goes into SENT items on GMAIL and does not show the actual sender’s address for me to even reply too. If I point the SMTP plugin to another server it works fine.

It also shows “On Behalf of” but still with no proper sender address.

Why will the contact form not send properly using GMAIL but the SMTP test message is fine? Is this an SMTP plugin issue or contact form issue?

  • I’m not sure I fully understand your problem. But are you aware that Gmail’s smtp-server is forcefully changing the sender id to your gmail account. If for example, you try to send a mail from let’s say [email protected] through you personal smtp.gmail.com using your gmail account, e.g. [email protected], you might have expected that you mail got through to the receiver with [email protected] as the sender id.

But apparently Google rewrites the sender ID in the process so that it match the authenticated gmail account.

I’m not sure if this is related. But it’s just a thought.
Perhaps this might help you, too:

Thanks. I decided to install POSTFIX on my new server which has a dedicated IP on a vCloud Express hosted solution so I can control it. By doing that I don’t even need SMTP technically and I found some themes and plugins I use will always try to send using PHP MAIL() and without sendmail or postfix nothing goes out. the FAQ for the WM_SMTP plugin states in fact that some themes and plugins will bypass the setting so I needed to install a local mail server anyhow.

@biberkopf: yes Google rewrites sender mail, is there a way to automatically take the email address of the sender that submit a Contact Form 7 form instead of my Gmail e-mail?
