• I tried using the plugin and system to migrate a site from Dreamhost. Although the process seems to be simple and Siteground offers good support, the reality is that it does not work. At least with the aforementioned hosting.

I did a couple of tests and an additional one with the guidance of a SIteground support agent, however the process stops without throwing any error notification.

The agent gave me a special path to be able to consult the log and know what happened (it is not a path that can be consulted directly in the plugin interface) /wp-content/siteground-migrator.log

The log showed this on the 2 attempts after the first failed attempt:

[18-Jan-2024 01:23:25 UTC] INFO: Transfer started. Creating archives of files…
[18-Jan-2024 01:23:25 UTC] INFO: Updating transfer id.
[18-Jan-2024 01:23:25 UTC] INFO: Updating transfer psk.
[18-Jan-2024 01:23:28 UTC] INFO: Site domain to be changed to domain.com/

There the migration process gets stuck and nothing happens. I hope they can review it and correct it, at least so that it notifies to the admin that the process has stopped since I wasted more than 12 hours without knowing anything. I don’t rule out that Dreamhost has intentionally blocked this service.

It’s a shame as it seems to be a promising plugin.

    Hello @cchavarria,

We appreciate your input. From the log details you’ve shared, it’s clear that the migration is currently in progress. Should the migration encounter a failure or receive a termination signal from the remote host, the plugin is designed to reflect this by showing a failure status and an accompanying error message. It’s possible that if the migration appears to be “stuck,” it may still be active, potentially due to a slow connection from the remote host’s side.

For insights into the sluggish migration, we recommend reaching out to Dreamhost’s Technical Support.

Please note that the site administrator will be notified via email in the event of either a migration failure or successful completion. This notification feature is a reliable aspect of the plugin’s functionality. However, the migration must be halted for any failure to be logged and communicated.

    Best regards,
    Georgi Ganchev

No error messages. Waiting several hours and nothing updates, progress, signals of activity or notice of failures. This weird behavior was corroborated by a Siteground support agent and the only solution was to request a manual migration assisted by their team.

    @cchavarria,

The process would not be reported as failed if no such signal is provided by the remote host.

I am afraid that it is not possible for us to investigate the issue through the forum. What I can assure you is that the plugin has functionality that will report the successful completion or failure of the transfer should such is indicated.

The logs you showed us only confirm that the plugin reported the process as still ongoing. For more details please contact your remote host’s Technical Support who have access to the server logs and can review what has happened.

I wait for 12 hours and it was all in the log. Sorry, it’s too much waiting. None a single file was transfered. You must accept the posibility that someting can go wrong and stop all proccess. Including the plugin’s ability to log and send notifications on the source site side, specially if the host put some kind of especific restriction. The developers of this plugin must consider some kind of cronjob for validation from the Siteground side to check the process within a time window and send a notice if something fails.
