    I just installed the Maintenance 2.7.1 plugin on a dev WordPress 4.5.1 install (it never had that plugin installed before) and when I activated the plugin, it immediately enabled Maintenance Mode, which really surprised me.

    Is this a deliberate feature of the plugin? If so, it’s somewhat dangerous default behaviour. The obvious big issue that it’s an unexpected activation of maintenance mode, so you have to scramble around the admin interface to turn it off as quickly as possible.

    The other problem is that you’re given no initial chance to configure the plugin settings (text, bg image, logo, etc) before it goes into Maintenance Mode for the first time.

    The plugin does look useful, but the automatic enabling of maintenance mode straight after the plugin install/activation does discourage its use, particularly on live sites.

  • Hello,

    It’s a default feature of the plugin. You can turn the Maintenance off in plugin option immediately after activation.
    Make changes in the plugin settings you can at any time when it is switched ON or OFF. Inconvenience and problems should not appear

    I think the issue here is that you’re not told up front that your site will go offline immediately the plugin is activated for the first time. This means the plugin actually causes unexpected site downtime which isn’t good really.

    Also, when you’re in panic mode trying to turn off maintenance mode that hit you on first activation, clicking on the green “Maintenance On” button in the Settings doesn’t take immediate effect (despite immediately changing to a red “Maintenance Off” button to give you the impression maintenance mode is off). You have to remember to scroll all the way down the page and click on the “Save Changes” button. I think the Maintenance On/Off button should take immediate effect myself.

    We’ve added the Save button on the top of the Maintenance options page this changes will be realised in the next version of the plugin.
    When you login as administrator you can see in admin bar (at the top of the page) there is fixed messege “Maintenance is On”. So it’s easy to use.

    A colleague just installed the latest version of your Maintenance plugin (luckily not a live site) and was as equally shocked as I was that it *still* takes your site offline as soon as the plugin is activated for the first time.

    I’m disappointed that in the 10 months since I raised this issue, this dangerous and unexpected behaviour remains the default for the plugin. I’m also puzzled how this topic is in “Resolved” status because it clearly isn’t. Can you name one user of the plugin (apart from yourself) who thinks that taking the site offline immediately upon first activation is a good idea (the fact it also uses a design for the maintenance page that you might not want either doesn’t help matters)?

    rklrkl has totally right and thats also what I already asked for many month.
    I can not understand why here the developer FruitfulCode discussed here in the forum instead of finally a simple solution to present, why you could not set the plugin by default as simply in off mode !?

    Thats so simple and customers want that!

    Hello,

    As we answered it’s a default feature of the plugin from the very beginning. You can turn the Maintenance off in plugin option immediately after activation.

    We are thankful for your suggestion but in nearest future we not plan to change it.

    Regards.

    It may have been the default “feature” of the plugin since day one, but that doesn’t mean that the default was ever correct. I don’t expect *any* WordPress plugin, no matter what its function is (maintenance or not), to take my site offline immediately the first time it is activated.

    If you insist on keeping this incorrect default, please state very prominently in all obvious places where you’d download (or activate) the plugin that your site will be taken offline immediately when you activate it for the first time. This is extremely unexpected behaviour for a plugin, so the end user needs to know in advance.

    FYI, we’re no longer recommending this plugin to any of our clients because of this default behaviour – we’ve moved to other maintenance plugins (none of which take your site offline unexpectedly like this one does).

    Yeah;
    it’s very stupid to ignore customer whiches, and it’s also ver easy and quickto change the default setting mode to off for an plugin developer, so why you so hard refuse our suggestions?

    Hello,

    @rklrkl @agenciesfirst

    We are by no means ignoring your suggestion and we have it in our list for possible updates and discussions.

    It’s a default design and feature of the plugin. And, unfortunately, I am not able to guarantee.

    Regards.
