[Plugin: Google XML Sitemaps] Relocated sitemap.xml to root, gave permissions, but plugin can't

Plugin says “There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable.” I verified sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz are in the root directory (pulmccm.org/______) and have permissions (777) on the server.
I want the sitemap to include my non-wordpress pages (pulmccm.org/ccmtutorials/pulmonary-board-review.php for example).
What can I do next? Thanks for your help.
