[Plugin: Google XML Sitemaps] Sitemap Failing Google – Sitemap is HTML Error!!

    Hi,

    I’m having a problem getting my sitemap recognised by Google. I get the Red Cross and the following error message

    “Sitemap is HTML
    Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.”

    I’ve checked out my sitemap (https://thegoodgameguide.com/blog/sitemap.xml) and it all looks o.k. to me.

    Does anyone have any idea?

    Its because sitemaps are always expected in the root of a domain and yours is not. When it is searched for in the root a 404 page not found is generated which BTW is an HTML page which explains the error you receive.
    You need to create a robots.txt and place it in the root with the following line:

    Sitemap: https://thegoodgameguide.com/blog/sitemap.xml
