  • I just went through the first six sites and on that last one I received the error message. So I’ll return tomorrow to update.

There isn’t a problem to at least have the plugin installed and working regardless prior to updating the database file.

It’s been my experience that new IPs sometimes only add a few new ones over a period of time.

i.e. I had to block the entire range for Amazon’s cloud on a site on it’s own server to block a hacker. They are in the US so I can’t use the IP Block Country plugin. Amazon has updates or adds new IPs but it hasn’t been a lot at any one time.

Isn’t this all fun – work like a plow horse and continue to swat your tail to keep the flies off. It’s a never ending battle. Except we’re fighting two-legged cockroaches.

Perhaps time for some feedback ??

As this not being to able to download it directly from MaxMind may appear
more often. Especially if you are on a busy server with a few WordPress installations that actually use my plugin… And if a fellow user on the same server presses the download button several times MaxMind will block you for 24 hours.

How can I make clear that this is not a plugin problem?

Is there a way I can explain better the “do-it-yourself” method of downloading it from your home (or business) address and uploading it via FTP/SFTP?

Should I perhaps include a copy of the GeoIP database with the plugin?

    Something else?

    Feedback is appreciated ??

    Thank you for your feedback.

The link on the iQ Block country entry of your post seems to go to commentluv and not to either the official wordpress plugin site or https://www.redeo.nl ??

Thanks. I just fixed that link. It was originally on my CPU usage page and just decided to also add it to my Best WordPress PlugIns page by copying and pasting. Somehow, it copied the wrong url. I also checked my other page but it was correct there.

OK, I wrote a feedback reply earlier in the day and it’s gone – POOF!

In a nutshell, referring back to my experience in my last post above – I went through some more sites today, well after a 24 hour period and had success downloading without the error message for 5 sites. On the 6th site the error in download started up.

So when on the same server I suppose you’re indeed allotted so many downloads then you must wait.

I’m only guessing it’s the server but could it be the IP I’m working off of locally which is static. Either way for me the 24-hour limit is five downloads. I never double clicked on one site if that question comes up. Once the first error initiated I moved on until a fresh day begins.

The plugin works well and I’m grateful. The only hitch for me is the download issue since I have numerous sites to protect – yes, numerous.

Strange, I received that post in an e-mail but it’s not here now. You could get different dedicated IP addresses for your websites. I also have a lot of websites but it has never been a problem for me. I only download a new database from MaxMind every few months. Two or three times a year is probably sufficient.

Thanks Phil – BTW, if you see that missing post hanging around let me know. ??

I too get the notifications of these posts but they do not show up here in this thread.

Perhaps contact the admins about why they are gone?

Next version will have better detection if it hits the rate limit (and you have to wait 24 hours) or other download failures.

Thank you Pascal – I appreciate your attention to this matter. (Hopefully this post sticks ;))

Will the new version show as a notification in our Admin–>>Plugin area?

Here is a slight issue – I began searching a plugin like this one, up to now I was manually blocking in my CPanel at IP Deny. That can be cumbersome and I found you may sometimes block IPs you don’t wish to block when your blocking ranges.

The country I really wanted to block was Taiwan. Today I removed all blocked IPs in my CPanel and here we go again. Taiwan is back within in a few hours.

This person may be scraping content, not sure but I do know how they began banging one site in particular. It wasn’t accidental and the intent is malicious in nature.

So now I guess I must go back and do the manual blocking.

    Hi Don,

New version is not yet released. I need to test this version a bit more. If you cannot wait you can download the development version of course ??

You will see requests in the logfiles and even perhaps in a wordpress plugin stats. That depends on which plugin is loaded before the other.

You can lookup the ip adresses you consider to be bad on the MaxMind website and see what country MaxMind it thinks it is.

Also still on my wishlist for new features is a black and whitelist for IP addresses. So no matter what country it is from if a person is on the blacklist it will be blocked.

I am just thinking about if I should limit it to specific IP addresses or also allow some CIDR notation of IP blocks.

    Hi Pascal:

It’s difficult to isolate one IP withing the whole blocking scheme. I go after one, they change to another which may be fairly similar. I pick a range and one list of Taiwan ranges, for example, proved faulty and began blocking parts of New York.

I really appreciate your feedback and help with this plugin, you’re to be commended.

When the new version is released will we find that notice in our site admin area?

    Thanks,

    Don
