i want to make a plugin and the plugin will be released under the GPL (that’s no Question) BUT at the Settings-Page of the Plugin i want to display our Logo (is Registered) and our mascot (a little “person” we payed some money to design). i don’t want that these images can be changed and redistributed without my control (because of the branding).

So my Question: is this allowed? can i say, the plugin is GPL but these two images are NOT…?

Uups, i thought, these – for example – ARE freemium Plugins

They’re free plugins. They have premium plugin siblings, but the ones in the directory are free as a requirement of the directory itself. ??

Trademarking something doesn’t mean others can’t use, distribute it or modify it.

What? That’s exactly what it means! ?? From the very article you posted, Jan:

Trademark registrants are obligated to enforce their trademark or risk losing it.

Some famous examples are CentOS, the source-coce identical version of Red Hat Linux not called Red Hat… and IceFox.. the source-code identical version of Firefox not called Firefox.

@vogelor could certainly trademark his logo and distribute it with the GPL-licenced source of his plugin. But no-one else could distribute the same AND use his trademarked logo.. that’s his brand to protect. And as @ipstenu already pointed out, while that’s fine for the Internet at large, that may be a violation of the www.ads-software.com rules. www.ads-software.com would be similar to Debian GNU/Linux in this case, requiring ZERO trademarked content in the files that it hosts.

God I love intellectual property law.

Really, unless someone is actually a lawyer or judge here, it’s probably not the best place to be discussing the finer points of legal matters, and licensing is a legal matter.

WordPress is licensed under GPLv2, and all themes and plugins hosted on www.ads-software.com are required to be GPLv2 compatible in their entirety.

Yes – you are complettely right. And i close this topic now. But for me (and i hope for others too) this topic was realy good, because now i know more about the GPL and i know exactly, WHAT to ask to [email protected]

And i have to ask them, because in my opinion if this is right:

And as @ipstenu already pointed out, while that’s fine for the Internet at large, that may be a violation of the www.ads-software.com rules.

then there are several Plugins here who break the rules.

but this is 1) not my cup of tea 2)nothing we can discuss here ??

By the way. i already asked [email protected] but i think i asked the wrong question ??

Yep, if you have any concern about a plugin here violating the rules, it’s always best to ask plugins@ directly.

And on that note, I’ll close this down as requested. ??
