Jetpack/WPStats stopped working. I reinstalled and now get this message when trying ot connect to WP:

“Jetpack could not contact WordPress.com: register_http_request_failed. This usually means something is incorrectly configured on your web host.

    SSL connection timeout”

My host says it’s a Jetpack glitch, and based on previous experience with WP Stats, I tend to believe them.

Could you post your URL or, if you’d like to keep it private, submit a support ticket to us?

I blog at resistanceisfruitful.com/blog, but am about ready to uninstall Jetpack and try something else.

Have you deleted the xmlrpc.php file from your server? Or has CloudFlare blocked that file in some fashion?

Which directory is the xmlrpc.php file supposed to be in, and am I supposed to delete it?

I’ve deactivated CloudFlare, but continue to get the error message when Jetpack tries to contact wordpress.com

The xmlrpc.php file is in the home directory, btw. It has not been deleted.

@resistanceisfruitful: if you could install this plugin and post the results, that would be perfect.

Not sure why Cloudfare is listed as a server. I’ve deactivated it. Maybe I need to uninstall completely?

@resistanceisfruitful: it looks like the issue is that your host limits the PHP processes. You should get in touch with them and ask them if their PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN is set to one and, if it is, ask them to set it to two or higher.

Thank for the suggestion, but my host’s support staff (inMotion) says my shared server uses PHP, not Fast CGI, so the proposed solution would not apply. Or something to that effect. I’m so frustrated that I deleted the live chat conversation before copying it.

I’m just a hack blogger who is in way over my head. Fingers are pointing back and forth, and I do not have the knowledge or ability to discern who is right or wrong.

My best option now is to uninstall Jetpack (again), and try to find another service that will give me basic stats without having to jump through a lot of hoops. That’s all I wanted in the first place, not a bloated pack of tools that I won’t use, don’t need and didn’t ask for.

Could you try changing your name servers to point directly to your inMotion hosting? Right now, the name servers are pointing to CloudFlare and a colleague and I believe it might be causing part of the problem.

We would actually be interested in knowing what the issue is as well. We wouldn’t impact content directly on the server (.php, etc).

    “SSL connection timeout””
This leads me to believe that this is an SSL issue.

Sorry, folks, but I don’t have the time, patience or energy to troubleshoot this. Jetpack has been uninstalled, and if I continue to learn of problems with Cloudflare, I’ll ditch that, too. I’ve already disabled some components, due to conflicts with something else that I can’t even remember anymore!

Maybe some day someone will learn how to make the Internet work without having to be a rocket scientist.

I’m closing this request for assistance.

    Hey everyone,

This is Tim S with InMotion Hosting and we’re working with resistanceisfruitful to see why Jetpack seems to not be able to connect.

Does anyone know the IP address that JetPack would connect from? I want to verify that the IP address is not blocked on the server.

If anyone has server side suggestions to check please let me know. We host lots of WordPress blogs running JetPack and we’re not aware of anyone else having this issue. We just want to get it working again.

    Thanks!

    Hi Tim S,

Jetpack could be connecting from several different IP addresses in our data centers; it’d be hard to narrow down a specific one that could be blocked. We have dashboard.wordpress.com, jetpack.wordpress.com, and stats.wordpress.com, I believe, that all respond to requests from Jetpack, but they could be from any of our data centers or IP addresses.

In the testing I asked resistanceisfruitful to run above, our test suite indicated that PHP is configured in such a way that it could only spawn one process at a time. When Jetpack is initially connecting, it needs to have two processes spawned (one outgoing process, one incoming). This seems to be breaking the Jetpack connection process.

It also looks like HTTPS requests are being rejected entirely, which is not necessarily a problem. Jetpack tries to use either HTTP or HTTPS and both seem to be having issues currently.

Please let me know if I can help further.
