An author credit simply acknowledges the work and love that have gone in to its creation – it asks for nothing and costs nothing. But it is courteous.

You can always choose not to use the plug-in – that’s your choice.

I felt I had created something useful, and so I shared it with the WP community. I currently don’t feel that much like sharing again when faced with these condescending comments trying to attain some kind of moral high ground that doesn’t exist. I asked for nothing and now I’m being chastised for including a link to recognise the fact that I wrote this small (but I hope useful) piece of code.

You don’t get it.
Nobody is against having a link to the plugin author, per se.
The issue was/is the hidden link, which can be interpreted by search engines as something bad (spamming) – as it was pointed out above.

Peter – sorry you feel the responses here are condescending, but spam links are a serious problem, and if plugin authors aren’t made aware of the problem it will look very bad for those authors, and for the WordPress community.

If you have seen another plugin that does the same, please do contact the author and ask them to make the link visible. I really can’t stress the importance of this enough.

Wrong – because unless someone knows how to read your code they would not know your link was even there. You should never assume that people will read the code and therefore you should not hide anything in there.

No, I do “get it”, that is why I have updated the plug-in.

My point is not in opposition to the issue being made about potential spam – I have learnt something there; thus the change to the plug-in. My point is that the original idea of using the hidden attribute was to not clutter a user’s theme/style/layout. That’s all. I have stated that from the outset, therefore any other presumption (assumption) is not mine.
