Try this in your custom css:

/* two tables per row */
.entry table {
    width: 50%;
}
/* remove table alternate row background */
.entry table tr.alt {
    background: transparent;
}

I wrote in my custom.css and style.css, but it doesnt work.

It’s not working because you’ve added it to the top of the default theme style.css file, and it’s being overridden by the theme styles that come after it in the same file. I’d strongly suggest that you remove any custom code you have in the theme style.css file; your code will be deleted when the style.css file is replaced if you ever update the theme. You should do one of the following instead:
1. use the theme custom css option
2. use a child theme style.css file
3. use a plugin like Simple CSS

Try changing your custom css to this:

    border: 1px solid #000;
}

    background: transparent;
}
/* bottom border on last table row */
.entry table tr:last-of-type td {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #000;

You can set the width using a % or px. If you try to restrict the height you’ll run into problems unless you also adjust the individual table rows. But then you need to consider row content and overflow. Adjusting tables gets complicated pretty quickly.
