[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Deleting NextGEN and migrating short code?

I’ve been using NextGEN for over 4 years on a blog I manage. It’s a collaborative blog of 20 wedding photographers and we’ve been posting 20 new images and content per week for over 4 years. That’s 4,000+ posts!

We don’t fully use the features of NextGEN, but initially decided to use it because it was an easy way for each of the authors to manage their image content. Throwing all the images into a central image database using WP image uploader was a logistical, management nightmare.

The only features we’re using are the thick box when you click on the images and the ability to resize on upload. We had a few contributors trying to upload full sized DSLR images to their posts.

We’ve had an ongoing issue for the past 3 years with excessive server CPU and Memory usage. To the point that our site is getting throttled every 48+ hours. We’ve worked closely with our web host (Westhost) and they’ve been wonderful. We initially thought it was a WP theme issue, but have narrowed it down to an issue with NextGEN. Unfortunately, we now are faced with deactivating and deleting NextGEN entirely from our blog. (Not wanting to trash NextGEN at all, it’s served it’s purpose, but is killing our site).

Is there any way to successfully migrate all the images to a standard WP upload folder? A script that will find the images and linked NextGEN short code and automatically fix the directory, etc? There is no way I’m going to manually re-link each image, in each post, going back 4 years. I’d rather delete all posts older than a month and basically start over again. But I’m very concerned about losing all SEO history by doing that. (and great content).

Is there any way to do this quickly and easily?
