NextGEN displays an “HTTP Error” message (no other details) when using the Flash-based uploader with NextGEN 1.9.1 and WP 3.3. The problem occurs whether using drag-and-drop or the “Select Files” button. Images can still be uploaded if I “Disable flash upload,” but there goes the cool new drag-and-drop.

When the site was running NextGEN 1.8.4 and WP 3.2.1, the Flash uploader worked fine. It’s only broken since the upgrade.

And an odd thing: the HTTP error occurs only after the image has been 65% uploaded. (I am testing with images less than 20k, so it’s not a size issue.)

The error occurs even if all other plugins are disabled.

  • I am also getting a HTTP error message and unable to upload images.
I can say that it works fine when I am logged in as admin and I can create galleries and upload pictures at will.
The problem occurs when I log in with a subscriber account. Obviously I have enabled gallery creation and image uploading in roles.
If I turn off the flash based upload I can upload the images but thumbnail creation fails.

@deepthy, thanks so much for posting your solution! I changed the permissions for nextgen-gallery/admin/upload.php from 644 to 755 and now everything works beautifully.

Same problem here, flash uploader gives HTTP error on all systems I’ve tested (Firefox, IE, Safari, Chrome) whereas non-flash uploader is fine, but obviously only takes one file at a time. deepthy’s fix of chmodding /upload.php had no effect.

    I’m using NG 1.9.3 on WP 3.3.1

Well, that was quick – I’ve figured out what my problem was, so hopefully this will help with other people too.

I had a bunch of users that were all subscribers. None of them were able to use the NextGen flash upload, but they could all use the non-flash upload. It turns out that although they had privileges to upload via NextGen (in the NextGen roles settings), subscribers don’t have normal WP upload privileges. It seems the NextGen flash upload ignores NextGen roles and checks WP roles instead, so all I had to do was install a role manager plugin (I’m now using Vladimir Garagulya’s User Role Editor) and allow Subscribers to upload_files. Hey presto, they can now use the flash uploader.

i face the same HTTP error problem..for ages now..
using all latest versions of wordpress..buddypress…next gen..etc.

Multiple file upload- flash based upload (in posts and pages) works fine in wordpress>>media upload

Next Gen – single photo upload works fine
Nest gen – flash based upload – HTML error

    CHMOD workaround does not work

@simongreenland – could this be a role based error..because even as admin i cannot upload (using flash based uploader)..i use role scoper…(any suggestions with the settings)

I am beginning to think next gen is not 100% compatible with latest wordpress..

    any suggestions…anyone..

    @jackofalltrades999
which browser (+ Version!) do you use?
    WP single or multi-user?

    @chironex

    i use WP single
browser…all – mozilla, chrome, opera, IE..same error with all..

I’m sorry, i have no clue. So i dicovered, that it worked fine with opera and SRWare Iron (a secure Chrome-Browser clone), but not with firefox. Still courious.

running Nextgen with WordPress 3.3.1 with Safari. Sounds like the same problem. Upload with Flash Based Upload fails with an HTTP error. The red progress bar completes and is immediately followed by the single phrase HTTP error.

Uploading multiple files using the zip upload works perfectly

Image files uploaded are small in size and bytes

Now this was working before a hosting change so could be due to some setting on the new host.

Really need some help since we want to allow members of a camera club to control their own galleries using Nextgen and want to make the upload as simple as possible.

    Any ideas??

I have had the same problem for several weeks and have posted about it twice with no resolution (no responses on one post at all). I am also on the latest versions of WP and NextGEN, also have tried on Safari, Chrome and Firefox, to no avail. I can get most photos in an upload done (say, 22 out of 25) but 3 random images will produce a vague http: error. I disabled the flash uploader and tried doing those three individually with no positive result (I get taken to page on my site with the error, page not found). These are 72 dpi, average jog images, nothing fancy or large.

It’s very frustrating. Would really like to see a reliable solution.

(also having trouble with the Sort Gallery function – anyone else? Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes not at all. I go for the Time/Date sort. It’s a PITA to do manually.)

[ Do not bump, it’s not permitted here. ]

I’ve the same problem with the same wp and ngg versions.
The strange thing: if i do the upload with the admin user everithing works good, if i use another user i get the “i/o” error

    regards

My issue solved by hosting provider. Not sure what they did though – think permissions on the gallery. Have tested this further on a 2nd hosting service (Bluehost) and it worked fine.

Apparently one known bug/limitation (perhaps relevant to some posts in this thread) – flash upload does not work for a user who is not an administrator, workaround is to use the zip file upload.

I just wiped an unpublished gallery out of the images, made a zip of the images, and tried to upload that, no dice. I get a 404 error on my site, not even in the upload page. I am the only user on this site so am the admin (just double checked, yep).

    This is getting very frustrating.

Because I’ve seen no solutions or plugin updates and I am getting desperate, I tried the chmod on the upload.php file indicated above. No change. Still cannot add those orphaned photos to their intended gallery.

    Another frustrated user, here.

iwassertein, I am hosting through blue host and have the same problem even though I am an admisnistrator I can’t upload, do you know what they changed so flash uploader would work?

    Thanks
