Further experimentation has refined this. We have “shutter” selected for Effects, and that doesn’t appear to work. When I change it to “Thickbox”, that effect works. “Shutter” acts like we don’t have any effect selected, or we’ve selected one of the un-automatic options. In the new site I’m working on the shutter option and the thickbox options both work.

I’ve run the theme-compatibility check too, which gives the green checkmark.

I guess you will have to post this to the plugin developer. I think they are working on certain issue to fix the compatibility issue.

Hi everyone,

I’m using NextGen Gallery V1.9.1.
Since i’ve updated WordPress V3.3, I’ve got the same problem as described by vytaulla51 on my website gallery aufildessiecles
Changing theme or effect doesn’t solve the problem.
Any suggestion?

I have been battling with this – I deleted all my redundant plugins to no effect – then I deleted Google maps and got netgen back. I will try to re-install Google maps tomorrow and see what happens.

Same problem.

I can get some combinations of ‘insert gallery’ and ‘insert image’ to work but not ‘insert album.

Only just installed WP for the first time. Struggled thinking it was my error until visiting this forum. Disappointed with WP and NextGen already. Only been two hours using it. Ho hum.

What’s odd is that the shutter works in a new install of NextGen, but isn’t working with the update of NextGen in an older site.

If I delete NextGen and reinstall, will I have to rebuild the existing gallery? I’m assuming I will which is why I haven’t tried that yet. I’ve deactivated and reactivated, which retains the gallery but isn’t fixing the problem.

I am so NOT good with the code etc and fumble my way around – BUT – I am pretty certain that this problem is to do with the code in the header that comes with all the add-ins we use. Delete and reinstall the add-ins one by one, checking each time if the issue is solved when they are not in your header. I can only guess, but it would appear that something that does the same thing as nextgen will be the issue, in my case it appeared to be Google maps that puts an image on the page which is what nextgen does.

To see this code I opened the site in Firefox browser and hit f12 – which brings up the header codes to look at. This may be obvious to many but I have only just found this after one year !

I can see where you’re coming from, but as a brand new user, with no extras added to my header I still have the problem. As a Mac user F12 doesn’t work that way in Firefox, but you can look at the header code under ‘Appearance/Editor/Header’ in your admin panel. Nothing untoward, at least that I can see/understand.

I have a couple of plug-ins
Akismet, Contact Form 7, Enable Media Replace, Google Analyticator, and Woopra. But none ‘seem’ to be causing the problem. Like you, I’m not a code warrior so I bow to more enlightened folks and I’m hoping for a ‘fix’ from NextGen themselves.

Hi retina
Enable Media Replace, must by definition deal with media and will leave a ref:= in your header I would think. Try deleting it entirely and then check, you can always re-install it.

BUT like everyone I would bow to any code expert. I am wondering why no-one from nextgen has butted in to advise from the huuuuuuge list of contributors to the code that comes up when I opened ‘about us’ to look for help ??

I’m getting the same result as vytaulla51 on my galleries.

https://www.ispwp.com/italy-wedding-photographers/marco-miglianti-tuscany-italy-wedding-photographer

If I click on one of the thumbnails, the original full size image appears on its own page. I posted a previous message here describing how the Thickbox effect stopped working, but then the Shutter effect did work. And now even the Shutter effect doesn’t work. I tried all of the optional effects (thickbox, shutter, etc.) and I get the same problem with all of them. They all simply open the full size original on its own plain white page and I have to use the browser navigation to go back to the thumbnail gallery page.

If anyone discovers a fix I’d appreciate it! I have hundreds of these galleries on my site so I’m VERY interested in a solution.

Gave that a try. Deactivated/Deleted every plug-in except for NextGen Gallery. Easy for me to do as a newbie who hasn’t got tons of stuff added in yet, luckily. I wanted to test everything before going ahead with this. Must be a real nightmare for those who are relying on this with a lot of galleries etc.

Hi everyone,

i’ve deactivated and deleted Google Simple Map and it didn’t solve the problem. I hope the community will make a patch for this problem.

I believe that there are errors in the lines of code that nextgen put into the header. There are several of these lines with the ‘[‘ the wrong way around or a missing ‘]’

These came with the latest update but on of “special textboxes”

‘’

other applications may have similar errors – this one relates to the shutter effect that has been mentioned earlier – although the enclosing of [] with outside [ ] may be valid like here “ */ var ….nt”:”1″}; /* ‘ but I don’t know enough code to say ?????

‘’

Same problem.

Anyone to help?

I found one fix. I started using W3TC (W3 Total Cache). I found that if I disabled Minify, then the Shutter effect started working again, although the Thickbox effect still doesn’t work. So if you’re using W3TC, give that a try.
