[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Overriding templates

I’m trying to change the whole way the NextGen gallery plugin renders its stuff. I could edit the templates directly in the plugin, but we all know this is not a good idea, so I searched for a way to override the plugin’s templates. No luck, so far.

By “template override” I mean: copying the plugin’s templates to the current theme folder, follow some sort of naming convention so WordPress is automatically aware it should use the file inside the theme’s folder, not inside the plugin’s folder. Whenever a change is required, edit the theme’s file and not the plugin’s file.

I’m pretty sure it can be done, but I don’t know how.
