[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] slideshow won't load

Hi I just installed NextGEN Gallery and can’t seem to get the slideshow to work.
I want a slideshow in the header. I am using the recommended php code in the header, but all I get is the loading animated gif.

I then tried as an experiment having a slideshow on a post, with an embedded shortcode, but that has the same result. I have correct id for the gallery, and the images are small.

looking in the head I can see that jquery, jquery.cycle, and ngg.slideshow javascript are all loading.

Any Ideas?
