[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Wrong image sitemap

  • Hello,
    I’ve installed NextGEN Gallery Version 1.8.0 hoping to see the following great feature working, as written in the plug-in website:

    I’ve added the support for XML Sitemaps for images. You just need to install the great plugin from Yoast : WordPress SEO

    The created image sitemap list urls with zero images, in the format:
    website/ngg_tag/name of an image tag/
    Once you click on one of these urls you see a link to one or more posts which really has no images. Actually there are always 4 images in the left bar (last uploaded and a random image) , and maybe this fact has confused Yoast WordPress SEO.

    Anyone else with the same problem?

    I’v excluded the “tag” xml sitemaps in the Yoast plugin settings ( Exclude taxonomies), they are named as “Picture tag”

    Images are still listed in post & pages ( were they should be listed )

    Thank you Alex for the prompt response.
    I see that the images are listed also in my case but not under ngg_tag-sitemap.xml which has the date of 1970-01-01 00:00 and includes lines of the tags with zero images. This is a bug, and I’m not sure if it’s related to NextGen Gallery or to Yoast WordPress SEO.

    I see you don’t have in your index xml ngg_tag-sitemap.xml or category-sitemap.xml. What should be done for removing the ngg_tag-sitemap.xml?
    Manually editing the index xml is not the best solution.

    Why should I use ngg_tag-sitemap.xml if my images are already listed in the pages/posts sitemaps?
    I do want the images to be easily found in Google image search.

    For now, I’ve removed the image sitemap, using the following option of Yoast WordPress SEO:

    Version 5.8 (June 3, 2011)
    Feature: Added the Permalink Tweaker module, which lets you remove permalink bases for categories, tags, and/or custom taxonomies

    I’ve also upgraded to NextGEN Gallery Version 1.8.1.
    I still wonder if there is an SEO advantage of having a separate image sitemap by tags, which still doesn’t function.

    I’m no SEO Expert, but Yoast’s plugin did IMHO everything correct. To create a XML sitemap bases on custom taxonomies is ok, but not for the NGG tag, it’s not the purpose to use them in this way.

    Same problem with the ngg_tag sitemap date: 1970-01-01

    The solution, as Alex said, is to disable “Picture tag” in the Yoast’s plugin:
    SEO > XML Sitemaps > Exclude taxonomies
