MY WORDS ARE ALL IN CAPS.
Your words are all in sentence case.

    INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO:
Go to Settings -> Discussion and scroll down to ‘Default Avatar’. Select and Save the option called ‘BuddyPress Identicon (Generated and Stored Locally)’.

BUT WHEN I GO THERE THIS IS WHAT I SEE:

Default Avatar Default Avatar For users without a custom avatar of their own, you can either display a generic logo or a generated one based on their email address.

    MY ONLY OPTION IS:
    WP User Avatar
    Choose Image
    Save Changes

    NOTHING SAYS, “BuddyPress Identicon”

I NEED TO CHANGE BOTH THE USER AVATAR AND THE GROUP AVATAR.
THE ONLY THING I AM ABLE TO CHANGE IN THE USER AVATAR.

    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

It sounds like you have a conflict with some other plugin or perhaps your theme.

There is no Choose Image option in a default WP installation.

okay… so i found the conflicting plugin but the,

“BuddyPress Identicon (Generated and Stored Locally)”

is a broken image… how do I choose which default image I want to use for new users and new groups that don’t choose their own avatar?

Also, can I have one default avatar for users and a different default avatar for groups?

    Thanks!

I don’t know why it is broken.
But it does not use that image.
If you select BuddyPress Identicon, then Save and then click ‘Generate’, it creates avatars and stores them locally.
The purpose of this plugin is to not use default avatars!

I’m not looking to use the default “Mystery Man” avatar.

I want to use my own avatar.

#1 – how do I choose my own image (that will then become the NEW default Avatar for new users, etc.)

#2 – how do I change the default group image as “mystery group” avatar is the default image and I’d like to use a different default group image avatar.

BP Local Avatars does not provide a default avatar setting for members or groups.

Info re changing the default BuddyPress avatars is available via google search.
    For example:
