    Hi freedom1,

The plugin will automatically remove older versions of files to make space for newer files each time it backs up. So this is all automatic.

The only time you’ll have an issue is if there is no older versions to remove. So if all 99MB is the latest versions of the files, and it needs more room to upload, it will fail.

At this point you will need to exclude data from your backup so your blog size is less than 100MB, and then login and remove that excluded data from the online backup. This will give more room.

    Thanks Jason.

When you say ‘older version of files’ do you mean posts and pages that are older by date, in other words it will work through chronologically, or something else?

If I do have to go in and exclude data I suppose I could do that by either removing old posts, or being more selective in what I request you include in the backup?

    Hi freedom1,

The posts will take up negligible amounts of space and are are always included so you can’t exclude them.

What you can exclude is files (wp-uploads contents for media etc.) and it is those that take up all the space in the backup. If a file changes the plugin will back up the file again, but it will keep the older version online and you can download it if you need it. If you run out of storage space online however, it will begin removing these older generations of data to make space. First it removes data that was deleted from your blog (if you delete a file on the blog it keeps it online still) starting with the data that was deleted the longest ago. Then it will remove older generations starting with the oldest.

Of course if there is no deleted data to remove or no older generations it can’t backup anymore so will begin to fail with a quota error. It is this point you need to start excluding data, and you’d exclude it from the filesystem backup of wp-content as that is where all the large data is (images, videos etc.)

Thanks Jason, I think I’m ok with that now.

    Hi

I cannot load any photos on my Blog ‘The Financial Birder’ as I am gettin g this message : “ Old Winchester Hill & Woolmer Pond 009.JPG” has failed to upload due to an error
This file exceeds the maximum upload size for this site.

It does say that a maximum of 31kb is only allowed but I have never had this problem before with my photo uploads.

Normally, I would email to you to rectify this problem and you have given me more space on my blog to add more photos. But I did email a chap called Andrew a few days ago but since have had no reply. Could you sort this out please or tell me how to do it.

    Kind regards
    Jeff

    Hi jeffgoodridge47,

This is nothing to do with our plugin, you should contact your host as it refers to the upload limit on your blog.

This topic refers to our backup plugin and running out of available backup space on our servers. Which is not your issue.

    Jason

I think this is proper thread for a related question.

Installed your plug in succcessfully on one of my websites a week ago.

This one is very small, and back up went fine.

Then I updated wp to new version 3.5
    ————-
Today, I tried repeating the process on website #2, which is much larger, about 5 years worth of daily posts.

Successfully installed the plug in, but was unsuccesful in back up because files are evidently too large.

    Snapshots of the documentation:

Thanks for your help, I want to upgrade to WP 3.5.1 on this site and wanted to do backup before proceeding. Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dennis,

If you email username to support “at” backup-technology.co.uk we can increase your quota to 500MB – but this will happen on Monday at some point.

It won’t be able to go any higher so you’ll need to exclude some data. Maybe you have some big videos or some other backup files stored locally that are been backed up by our plugin and don’t need to be.

Also, I see there is a cache plugin in use as a file vanished during backup – you could exclude the cache folder as that can be regenerated by the cache plugin in most cases (check the plugin though)

    Regards,

    Jason

Thanks Jason for your prompt response.

I will follow up with your suggestions, and I appreciate the courtesy.

How do bloggers decide what files to eliminate? I prefer not to lose my blog posts and pages, which are unique content.

What are some alternatives? Any articles you can suggest for my reference?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Dennis,

The database backup contains blog posts and pages.

Sometimes a site will have a wp-content/backups folder which can be excluded – created by other plugins. Sometimes cache plugins also create wp-content/cache so that can be excluded too generally since the cache can always be rebuilt.

The thing that takes the most space is usually wp-content/uploads. Which contains all the Media and images. If there are large videos or uncompressed/high-resolution images inside it those can take up a very large chunk of space.

    Regards,

    Jason
