there’s the annoying trend among plugin creators to put the options page for their plugin not under “settings”, but make it part of the admin main menu, no matter if it makes sense or not.
come on guys, how often will i have to configure my instagram feed? this is in no way something that needs to be quickly accessible all the time, but only messes with clarity.
so… would it be possible to move this to settings where it belongs? this and a link to the settings from the plugins page should be more than enough. thanks!

    Hey @getupworks,

Thanks for getting in touch. We really appreciate feedback from our users and take any and all suggestions on board.

In regards to this specific request, it’s a difficult issue and I can appreciate where you’re coming from, but our main consideration in making the menu item visible on the left hand side of the admin dashboard was ease-of-use. As you mentioned, as this is very common among plugins then people expect it to be there. Many of our users are either new to WordPress or aren’t very tech-savvy, and so ease-of-use is a key consideration. If someone can’t find the plugin settings then they get frustrated. To you, it might make sense for the plugin settings to be within the “Settings” menu, but a lot of people only expect the main WordPress settings to be in there, and not settings for plugins. The “Settings” menu also doesn’t allow for sub-menu items, which is a limitation for many plugins.

If you’d like to either hide or move the menu items then this plugin can do that for you: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/admin-menu-editor/. That plugin will allow you to move the plugin menu item into the Settings menu as you requested. If you’d like just an easy way to hide our plugin’s menu item then you can do so by using this CSS:

    #toplevel_page_sb-instagram-feed { display: none; }

Let me know whether that helps at all, or if you have any other questions.

    Many thanks,

    John

    hey @smashballoon,
thx for your detailed reply! i get your point and think something like this might be a good solution:
show the main menu entry on plugin activation as it is now, but have the actual options page within the settings menu, so the main menu item just links there.
then give the option to turn the main menu item off, very similar to what yoast seo does with their admin menu bar item.
sub-menu items within the settings menu are often done with tabs.
    thx + best

    Hey Nico,

No worries, thanks for the suggestion, we’ll take a look at the Yoast SEO plugin to see how that works and whether it’s something we think we should emulate in our own plugin.

Thanks again, if you have any other questions or feedback at all then just let me know.

    Hey getupworks,

It looks like this thread has been quiet for awhile so I will mark it resolved. Let me know if you have more questions about anything!
