• Hi,

I’ve been working on a new website that will include a wordpress blog with podcasting plugin (hopefully anyway).

It works fine on my development server (Vista, WP 2.5) but when I upload to the hosted Linux server (which will be the public one eventually and is running WP 2.6) the audio files appear in the posts in the blog (i.e. in the flash player, which works ok) but the podcast feed is empty. It’s really strange.

Also, on the working server when I go back to the post the podcast file’s URL is still in the “Podcasting” section beneath where you type the post. On the non-working server it appears to have “forgotten” it.

    Can anyone help?

  • I’m on WP version 2.7 and podcasting version…. well I just upgraded ??

in podpress I was able to ping itunes directly…. is this automated in podcasting or..?

Thanks for the response my friend

oh, nevermind I found out how to ping itunes on my own…

how long should it take for itunes to respond to the ping… any idea? insight would quel my paranoia causing me to check itunes relentlessly haha

People subscribed to your feed will get the latest episodes based on their iTunes settings (for most this is every hour), but the iTunes directory only updates once every 24 hours.

hmm, maybe I still have a problem then…

itunes is failing to detect all of my prior podcasts… they’ve just been wiped from the system. Somehow they’ve categorized my blog as “science and history” and the only thing that remains is the blog image and description

my host is site5…. pretty big host, but maybe there is some problem with them when it comes to wordpress and podcasting…? I just wish that I knew how the backend of podcast aggregation worked and why it can’t be more straight forward IE: itunes gives you the tools you need to get your podcast online…. poo.

Do you have a link to your feed? I’ll take a look at it.

I’ve just got the newest upgrade, so we could wait a bit and maybe it’ll update properly, but here are the links:

Direct podcast link (the one that opens itunes): https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=260320192

    and the feed link: https://www.donimusic.com/podcast

the feed should show just 1 podcast episode (episode 8) because this is the only one I have applied your plugins settings to. The good news is that it seems as though the settings have been accepted so far so we’ll have to see what the great iTunes thinks. Thanks for your help on this

Sorry in the post above I gave you the incorrect feed link… it should be this: https://www.donimusic.com/feed/podcast/

Also, I just noticed something…. the link I use to ping itunes is showing a different feed address: https://www.donimusic.com/category/podcast/feed/

I have no idea why this is… I’ve looked around but I can’t figure out where, how to change it…. to be completely honest, I muddle through the podcast creation process with the old plugin and somehow it started working so I didn’t touch anything…

here is the link I’m using to ping itunes but I’m pretty sure that the problem lies in my feed address:

    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=260320192

Yeah, the feed address is definitely the problem.

Do you currently have a category called Podcast? I mention in the Known Issues section there is currently a bug with this. I’m not sure really what’s going on with WordPress, but odds things like this happen when a category is called Podcasting. I am working to resolve the issue in a future update, but for now it is advised to not have a slug for a category called podcast.

In the mean time, I would open up your wp-includes/feed-rss2.php file and add <itunes:new-feed-url>FEED URL</itunes:new-feed-url> right below <channel>. That should get your feed pointed to the right URL.

so, i put that bit of code into the feed-rss2.php… no changes thus far..

I’m not sure how I will be able to tell if my podcast is working though, like, when i look up my podcast on itunes… will it be the same one… or will itunes start indexing a new one?? Sorry the whole podcast mechanism mystifies me… why cant people manually submit their podcasts to whichever podcast host they’d like to be on…. :/

I really like the look of this plugin as it’s much simpler for my Contributors to understand than the PodPress we were using before. Thanks cavemonkey for you continuing development to this project.

That said, I’ve been having a similar problem lately: while my regular RSS feed works: (https://audiodevocion.bertobox.com/feed) my Podcasting-generated feed url does not: (https://audiodevocion.bertobox.com/feed/podcast).

I noticed this because my iTunes Music Store page reads my feed ‘correctly’ (apparently it reads my regular rss feed instead of the one created by Podcasting), but once I suscribe and it tries to load the Podcasting feed onto my iTunes Podcasts Library it fails to find anything.

I had not originally noticed any errors, since everytime I loaded [or so I thought] my Podcasting feed on Safari it defaulted to showing me my regular rss feed: (/feed) instead of my Podcasting feed (/feed/podcast/) thus making me believe that it was working fine, but upon loading both those addresses on Firefox, i noticed only the (RSS) “/feed” works and not the Podcasting “/feed/podcast”.

Another point that I’m somewhat concerned about: Since I haven’t really seen how my real Podcasting-created feed will display in iTunes, I’m worried that it could display like my regular feed does, and that’s no good, as it (my current rss feed, not the Podcasting one) destroys each episode’s ID3 tag metadata by replacing it with a blogpost-related meta data. this is no good to me, as i had taken a long time writing specific metadata in each episode’s file. I guess I won’t find out about this issue until i can actually see my Podcasting feed though.

As far as troubleshooting goes, I’ve tried reading a few of the FAQs, and had my WP recreate a .htaccess file by resetting my Permalinks, and still nothing worked. If you would like other than that, everything else seems to be working fine.

by the way, I’m using Podcasting version 2b.19 and WP2.7

    Doni,

You’ll see the feed reindexed with your episodes. Apple says this process can take a week or two, so just be patient.

    bertobox,

Try removing the accented o in your feed title. iTunes doesn’t seem to like those characters.

Regarding the iTunes directory pointing to your regular feed, follow the directions I gave to Doni earlier in this thread to correct this.

Unfortunately Podcasting will currently use the post content, but a future update will address this. I can’t give an ETA, but I know I’ll have it in before 2.0 goes final.

I don’t see a way to update the feed URL in the podcasting plugin for my blog – that keeps showing up as a prepopulated item – any ideas?

    blog: https://www.canonblogger.com
    feed: https://www.canonblogger.com/feed
redirects to feedburner (now google) https://www.feeds2.feedburner.com/CanonBlogger

And the error I (and others) are getting is:

    <enclosure url=”https://www.canonblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/audio/CBPodcast64.mp3&#8243; length=”a:5:{s:6:”format”;s:14:”default-format”;s:8:”keywords”;s:0:””;s:6:”author”;s:0:””;s:6:”length”;s:0:””;s:8:”explicit”;s:0:””;}” type=”a:5:{s:6:”forma” />

How is it putting all that crap in in there and not entering the correct length info?

The feed URL can’t be changed – yet. An upcoming update will allow you to change the feed URL.

Regarding the data showing the length, somehow that data in your database became corrupted. Try deleting and recreating the episode and that should fix your data corruption.

Okay, thanks. Got that part fixed. Now that my history is fixed (for the most part), I am moving to a hosted solution for new episodes and eventually I am going to have to update the URL that iTunes feeds from so that it migrates over from mine to theirs. I had this functionality under the podpress and blubrry plugins, but don’t see one for podcasting. Am I missing something obvious or is that not there either?
