[Plugin: Popularity Contest] show top ranked in month AND category

I’m really stumped here. I’m trying to combine two functions, and it’s not working. I’m pulling my hair out in frustration.

What I want to do is make the 4 most popular posts for each week appear at the top of the main page. BUT, I want these 4 posts to only come from certain categories.

I’ve looked through the top_ranked_in_month and top_ranked_in_cat but I don’t know enough about PHP/SQL to make the two work in unison. For some reason, using the normal get_the_category or the_category doesn’t work with these, either.
