For ALL plugin searches, both on wordress.org and from sites.

Why, oh, why, is there no way to filter or sort the search results by compatibility? And just as vital, by how recently the plugin was updated?

I just did a search for ‘directory’ and the number one plugin hasn’t been updated for over a year. How is that relevant? I’ve made this request before, and it’s fallen on deaf ears.

The plugin directory is currently undergoing a large scale revamp, and this will include the plugin search.

You can follow along on the progress on this ticket:

How can you equate last modification time to relevancy?
What if that plugin was so well-written that it didn’t need updates? What if it was written for a static area of WordPress and doesn’t need updates?
I’m all for removing the weight that last update gets and just match the keyword or tag.

    Hi Joy,

I am not equating last update with relevancy, and cannot understand how you read that into my request. I am talking about being able to sort by last update, by version compatablity as well as by relevancy.

I don’t think it’s a matter of how well written a plugin is. Frequent updates are a sign that the plugin hasn’t been abandonned by the developer.

Outdated plugins account for 54.2% of WordPress vulnerabilities according to WP WhiteSecurity. (https://www.wpwhitesecurity.com/wordpress-security/statistics-highlight-main-source-wordpress-vulnerabilities/).

While it is possible that outdated plugins may still work without leaving any vulnerabilities, I for one do not take that chance.

    Cheers,
    Russell

Still, whether a plugin has been updated or not doesn’t tell you anything about security.
