• To the best of my understanding, to use SFC requires that you set up a Facebook App to get the required API keys, the ones marked as ‘required’ in SFC. Setting this up is painful and confusing (like everything in Facebook) but well documented in SFC and did seem to work ok.

However, just in the last 24 hours Facebook has started showing my ‘App’ in all it’s search results rather than my page. So whenever anyone clicks on my page in their search results they get sent to a generic Facebook redirect page saying “You are being redirected to the app” and then if they click continue they get sent to my website, not my Facebook page.

Previously they would stay on Facebook and see my place page, now they don’t.
    Arrrrggh ??

I can’t see any way around this without removing the app and breaking SFC, the best idea so far has been to change the name of my App so that it won’t show up when people search for my place name.

It’s a conceptually ugly hack and I won’t know for a few hours (until the FB caches/indicies rebuild) if it will actually work.

So, is this a problem anyone else is having?
Is there a way to exclude an FB App from FB search results?
Is there an alternate way to set up SFC now without creating an App, even if it means reduced functionality?

On the Settings->Advanced page for your App, at the very bottom there should be an option called “App Page”. This may not be available to newer apps, I don’t know. But in my case, it points to my Fan Page for the site/app, and when you visit my app’s page directly, it redirects you to there.

Now, I migrated my App to this when they removed the App Page Walls, so it got it from there. I don’t know if you can manually set this.

Thanks Otto, it doesn’t seem to anymore – now it presents as a “Create Facebook Page” button that generates a new ‘community page’, which is described as not a regular page but rather an app specific page with a bunch of app related links/buttons that allow users to block the app/play the game etc.

You can’t use an existing facebook address for this page and there’s no UI to specify any sort of redirector before hitting it – the only action you can do is create or delete the community page.

I’m still waiting to see if the name change hack works – it’s been 24 hours so far and it’s still not showing up, but surely even facebook have to respect a name change and flush a cache eventually!
