[Plugin: Simple Login Log] Compatibility with Multisite. Which user levels have access to log?

    Hi Max,

    Great plugin. Very simple, which is awesome, and exactly what I was looking for.

    I have it running on a Multisite install, and I noticed something that might be helpful to other users. You could also consider this a feature request, but I’m not sure how much it would take.

    Since user levels work differently with Multisite, only Super Admins (aka Network Admins) can see the “Login Log” page under “Users”. Just simply being an “Administrator” for a specific site is not enough to give that person access to the Login Log.

    I would think most Multisite users would want all regular Admins to be able to see the log. Giving people the option to select which user levels could see the log would take it out of the “simple” category, so I wouldn’t want that.

    An idea how we use the plugin for Multisite
    A client of ours uses it as a communication tool, similar to a project management portal. Each new client/project gets a new site. They provide basic access to their clients (who can comment & view things), while they are admins (to add pages, etc.). It’s really useful for them to check activity, and monitor when/how their clients are logging in.

    Dave, I was just doing minor tweaking in the plugin and decided to take a look at the user capabilities that can view the Login Log. The login log is visible to any users that have capability to “edit_users”. If you take a look at the Roles & Capabilities comparison table, you’ll see that the Super Admin and Admin has this capability. In other words, regular Admins of single sites should be able to view the Log. Are you sure you didn’t limit your Admins in some other way?

    Thanks for the follow-up. I’ve done some testing on my end, and here’s what I’ve found.

    I created a fresh Administrator account. When logged in as this account, I noticed that I WAS NOT ABLE to edit users. I had a “Remove” link for other users, but no “Edit” link. This confirms the reason why I’m not seeing the Login Log… because I don’t have the “edit_users” capability.

    There was only one plugin I could think of that might be messing with roles & capabilities. It’s called “More Privacy Options” by D. Sader (https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/more-privacy-options/).

    I deactivated this plugin to see if it gave my Administrator the ability to “edit_users”, and it did not.

    Looks like your plugin is coded well, and setup correctly. I just need to figure out why my Admins can’t edit users. But that’s for another thread.

    Looks like WP 3.x Multisite does not allow Admins to edit_users. It’s setup that way on purpose.

    One last thing, as this might be useful to the community.

    This plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/extended-super-admins/ looks like it will allow you to make people a Super Admin so that they can edit_users, but then restrict many of the other Super Admin privileges so they do not break the site.

    I have not tried it out because I’m not concerned with making one or two people Super Admins. I trust they will not break anything. But it might be what someone is looking for.

    thank you very much for looking into this. I’ll definitely take another look and change the capability to something that will let regular Admins view the log. Will try to get it done sometime this weekend.

    Dave, I released the update (v.0.9) letting users with capability “list_users” view the login log. I tested it on my multi-user setup and it works. Happy logging! ??

    Hey Dave,

    I spent a whole Sunday messing with the plugin and added a few “premium” features. For example you can track some user activities – pretty much anything related to creating/editing/deleting content, whether its posts, pages, custom post types, categories etc. I’m not sure how useful this would be to you and/or your users/admins/clients… but if you’re interested in testing it out, I’d be glad to send you a copy.
