This sidebar is exactly what I was looking for but one question — is there a way to remove a custom sidebar? Or edit the name of it? I created a sidebar that I thought would be specific to a page so I gave it that page name, now I realize I will be using it on several pages so would like the name to be more generic but can’t figure out how to change the name of the sidebar, or delete it.

To remove a custom sidebar, just reset or rename the sidebar on any pages that are using it.

I don’t want to remove it from the page that is using it, I want to remove it from (or rename it on) the available sidebars on the Widgets Admin page.

Right, so here’s what you’ll need to do:

If you have widgets in the custom sidebar, drag them to the Inactive Widgets section to save them.

Then go rename the sidebar on every page that’s using the custom sidebar. The first time you do this, the new custom sidebar will be created. When there aren’t any pages using a custom sidebar, it will no longer show on the Widgets admin screen.

After you’ve done that, you can drag your widgets from the Inactive area to the new custom sidebar.

I’m just starting the site. I had put custom side bars in but now want them out. When I access Appearance / Widgets, there’s a list of custom sidebars. The top side bar is called “Main Sidebar”. When I access a page to edit it, there’s “Sidebar”, then “current sidebar”, then “Default sidebar”. Are “Main Sidebar” and “Default Sidebar” the same?

All remaining pages show only “Default Sidebar” listed, not any of the other customer sidebars. So it appears there aren’t any pages using the custom sidebars, yet the customer sidebars remain listed in the edit page view. ????

The problem is not viewable from the site, only from the dashboard.

Never mind. I removed the plug in for the sidebars and that removed them. Thanks anyhow.
