As you stated, the parameter: start=”random” just gives you a random starting photo.

The random feature is available in the Pro edition of the plugin – https://www.slickrflickr.com/upgrade/random-flickr-photos

So to display 4 photos randomly say in a sidebar widget from a possible set of 30 you would use items=”30″ random=”4″. The sort order of the displayed photos is also randomized as well as the selection.

This feature uses caching so the information about the photos is only fetched once from Flickr. This makes it perform efficiently. The cache expires after 24 hours but you can clear it sooner manually if need be if you replace photos on Flickr.
