    Hi,

Looking for assistance or advice on the following issue.

I was completing work for a client on a new version of their site, so created a staging site on a subdomain. At the same time, there was another staging/dummy version of the site being used to test a custom plugin.

On the new site version, I deleted the Mailchimp plugin as it was not needed at the time, and this then removed all the Woocommerce data from the live site from within MailChimp.

Upon reading up on the general topic, it seems that no data is stored within Mailchimp, so removing the plugin, removes the data from Mailchimp, for this example situation, it seems reactivating the plugin resolves the issue after a resync is completed.

In my instance, I removed the plugin from the 3rd test site, while keeping the staging site’s version of the plugin deleted. I then tried resyncing the live site, with no success. New data seems to be following into Mailchimp but all past data is gone.

Is there anyway to recover the lost data? I’m totally perplexed by the whole experience, and any assistance would be appreciated deeply.

@aic_technologies, thanks for reaching out. Uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin with the same Audience can sometimes fester things under the hood. However, we would like for you to try one more time to do a fresh reinstall of everything. If order and customer data are present in the production site, it should sync over to Mailchimp business as usual.

Let us know if that resolves the problem. If not, we can try to do some remote diagnostics.

Hi @khungate, thank you for the reply.

I completed another fresh install but the problem persists, and now the data related to the most recent post-issue campaign is gone too, so it just seems to be historical data that is impacted, future/new data is working fine.

@aic_technologies thanks for the note back. To clarify, are you referring to past campaign conversion tracking? Or are you referring to the actual e-commerce sales (data) not showing up on the past information? Out of the box, the plugin should grab all historical sales and customers. However, it would not be able to populate conversions, clicks, etc.

If it’s not able to grab the historical data we’ll definitely want to investigate further. Let us know!

@khungate, thanks for the quick reply. I am referring to past campaign conversion tracking. I’m perplexed at this point if this is the case, shouldn’t there be a warning that removing the plugin does this? Why wouldn’t the data be stored in Mailchimp, and why can’t it be recovered in some way.

Removing a plugin from a staging site, shouldn’t just destroy all the campaign metrics for the live site surely.

Hi @aic_technologies, feedback noted on the warning; that’s a good idea.

The short answer to your question is that tracking data is done on the fly, and isn’t stored by Mailchimp currently. I can see where this would be a nice addition and we’re happy to pass that on to the product team for a future enhancement. In regards to destroying data on a staging vs. production site, it’s all tied to the Audience on activation. If you’re using the same Audience, removing either site would also remove the data as noted.

Let us know if you need anything else. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I often work with staging sites with this plugin, and could see myself encountering the same issue, but am not sure if I am completely clear from reading through the thread on what caused this and how to avoid it.

If either of you have a moment, would one of you mind posting what steps should be taken (or not) to avoid triggering this issue when working with the plugin (and possibly deactivating or deleting it) on a staging site?
