[Plugin: SyntaxHighlighter Evolved] Non-breaking spaces (nbsp) being ignored

Recent version of WordPress have a useful feature where it automatically inserts a nbsp element on empty lines so that you can have blank lines, e.g.

First line

 

Non-breaking space element automatically added above

The SyntaxHighlighter Evolved breaks this. With the plugin active, even switching from HTML editor to Visual Editor will remove the   element.
